create online CSS server over LAN network
#1
Hi all,

I have been trying to figure out how to setup CSS server over my LAN network for 2 days but just no hope.

I am using a PC which is accessing to internet through other computer via switch [Not router]...

More detail:

My pc is PC2
My friend pc is PC1.

Moderm - PC1 - Switch

Switch - PC2

So you can see that my PC is connected to internet via my friend machine.

I create CSS server running on LAN network without any problem, but just cant make it online.

I tried to put this command line in CMD console:

"C:\Program Files\Valve\HLServer\srcds.exe" -console -game cstrike +ip 62.31.191.2 +maxplayers 16 +map de_dust2

then i got error message: Could not allocate dedicated server UDP port.

when i removed "+ip 62.31.191.2"... it worked like charm but just on LAN and only me can join and play alone Sad .. no one else can.

Should I have to buy a router to sort out problem????? Please help !!!

Thank you so much .

Hi there,

You have the perfect setup to run a server. Altho I'm wondering why you run the server on the computer BEHIND the switch instead of the one in FRONT of the switch. If you run it on the one in front you don't have to do anything, it'll work first time you start it up.

Well anyways, if you really want to or have to run it behind the switch you have to forward ports on the PC in front of the switch.
In order to do this you have to go to the internet connection properties> Advanced> then in the internet connectio sharing box click the "settings" button> forward the ports here.

Thanks for quick response. I wondered what I have to do like this:

This configuration was made on PC1 ( PC in front of switch)...

One more thing, what IP address i should put in the box: External IP (62.31.191.2) or Internet IP on my PC (192.168.0.157)...

I actually tried both of IPs then execute command line as:

C:\Program Files\Valve\HLServer\srcds.exe" -console -game cstrike +ip 62.31.191.2 +maxplayers 16 +map de_dust2

It still did not work...

And here is picture of my cmd window when I removed the +ip 62.31.191.2

Based on this ports was mentioned in many many threats.

UDP 1200 (Friends Network)
UDP 27000 to 27015 (Gameport)
UDP 27020
TCP 27030 to 27039
TCP: 27015 (SRCDS Rcon port)

You have to put in the IP shown when you type ipconfig in start>run>cmd on the PC where youw ant to run the server on.
Also the command.jpg looks correct, it should be working fine.
So you have to use the internal Ip for everything, you give your external to your friends.

Ya, something wrong with configuration on my friend PC. I finally made server running on my friend PC. Server is now online and my friends can join and play like others. Only problem is that server is so lag.

My friend pc: P4, 2.56Ghz, 1gb ram, 60Gb hard-disk (load of space left) and our broadband connection speed is 2MB.. ( might be a main problem here)..

Is there any way can reduce the lagging???

Big thanks to Drocona.

Well the server mainly uses uplaod so if his upload isn't sufficient for the amount of players you host it will lag.
I'm talking about 8 players per 512kbps here. That holds fine.
If it's less than 512 you'll just have to calculate it yourself a bit, I always use 40kbps per player for normal servers.

is there anyway to run a lagfree 10 slot server on a 512kbps upload?
When i run mine at the moment i get people with 72s ping with my friend who just lives down the road and then my other friend who lives in sweeden gets 30+ ping on my server but on average i get 70+ and i have done sv_downloadurl to my webserver with one.com

There is a way but the quality won't be near perfect at all (lots of choke, probably tickrate drops too) due to a sv_maxrate that is way too low.
