Hello everyone, this is my first post and I have some questions to ask. I have more than basic computer knowledge but my knowledge only limits it self to the client side. So for the last couple months I have been looking around the internet for guides on Game servers and such. I haven't really come across any good ones so I thought I'd join this forum because, from what I read it seems like you know what your talking about.

1: What is the basic hardware needed for 1 player?

2: When talking about servers I always think rackmount and what is the difference between the "U"'s (i.e 1u 2u etc.)?

3: What distro in your opinion of Linux is best to use?

4: How many servers could possibly go on 1 server?

5: Are there any open source game panels?

6: Say I want to host another game for a friend, do most other games take up about the same hardware as Source?

I ain't the best at servers so far hehe but i can answer you on a few of your questions:

3: What distro in your opinion of Linux is best to use? = SRCDS is made for windows. But of course it can run linux.

4: How many servers could possibly go on 1 server? = Depends on how good your server is...

6: Say I want to host another game for a friend, do most other games take up about the same hardware as Source? = Yes no problems with that. If your server is good enough/bandwidth can hold it.

Also are you going to rent a server, or buy one and put on a data centre with 100mbit or so. Because it depends how fast the upload speed for the server will be. As higher, as more players can it hold.

I was planning on building one and buying a dedicated line. Around here (Washington D.C.) you can get good connections and bandwith. If you don't mind me asking where are you from in the netherlands? I'm half dutch my self, don't speak any though.

I am not from Netherlands hehe. Just because my clan servers are hosted in NL doesn't mean i am from there Smile I am from Denmark

Hi there here are some answers:

1. 1 player uses around 5kb/s bandwidth, RAM and CPU are pretty low, however the more you run on one server the higher it get's and it's an exponential increment.

2. A server doesn't have to be a rackmount, it can also be a tower/ATX case you use for your own computer at home. When talking about rackservers, they are always measured in "U's". It stands for Unit, it's a size used for racks.
A datacenter has for example a 15U rack, that means there's room for 15 units of servers. 1U is the smallest and then u get 2,3 and I believe up to 4 or 5U servers.
It's just a standard set so you don't have to calculate with inches/centimeters.

3. There are so many Linux distro's and everyone of them has its own advantages, it's really what YOU prefer to use. My choice will always go to a console based distro if I would use Linux. I however try to keep it on windows since the SRCDS was made for windows and there is little development on the linux side (still crappy coding and stuff).

4. Like Bonsaihero said, it really depends on the server specs. Mostly we talk about player slots, as a P3 1GHz will hold around 20 players at 33 tickrate, now you can make 2 servers at 10 players or 5 servers of 4 players.

5. I'm not sure about this (the names I don't know and stuff), I think there are a few out there but not much for sure. Most of them are paid services but you'll have to google a bit or search these forums, there have been a few posts about it. That's all I know.

6. Yes, most games use equal or less resources than CS: Source. You can look at the pricing per slot at gameserver providers to see which require most bandwidth, the higher the price, the more resources the game takes.
Most new games (next gen) use more than source.

I am from the Netherlands, I live near Alphen a/d Rijn (Ter Aar) which is in the province of Zuid-Holland.

Do you think it would be possible to come up with maybe a max each player would use?
Is it possible to monitor how much each player uses?
Honestly I would love to write some awkward equation to help others find out their hardware needs after me.

go here:

http://whisper.ausgamers.com/wiki/index.php/Tickrate#Server_Bandwidth_Calculation_for_Dummies

it has a matrix of rate vs slots vs max upload necessary.
