Hardware Question
#1
Hey guys, hows it going?

Hey i was wondering, i was looking to spend a lil money on getting me and some friends an actual dedicated server for our lan parties. So this server would only be ran on lan.

My Question is, is should i invest in a server that has mulitple old cpus or one better one. For example: should i get dual/quad core P3 Xeon 600MHz or should i get one higher clocked Xeon, Get my drift? This is all if RAM isn't an issue, just the processor

Your reply on previous experience or just more knowledge on server requirements would be much appreciated, and never turned down. Thanks for your time

Depending on what you want to run on it I think a P4 3GHz or higher is certainly needed, this will hold 40 slots @100 tick.

you'll need at least 1GB RAM to go with that.
Also, the lower MHz cpu's aren't useful at all since the SRCDS can only run on a single core, it won't use multiple.

Of course it all depends on what you are aiming for, this is just a small example.

Thank you Drocona for replying to me. We were hopefully getting about 30~40 people at our lan party. And since we are on LAN, there isn't much of a difference between 66 and 100 tick is there? i know higher fps is better, to a point, but on lan since data transfers are so fast.

Well actually, 100 tick was designed to run at high speed conenctions with locations close to eachother. On the internet you won't notice the difference and running 66 tick is much cheaper yet with good quality. On a LAN 100 tick will increase performance much more than you might think.

I've been running servers on a 2200 man LAN 11 day party. They all run 100 tick unless the CPU gets real stressed I put them to 66 to be able to handle a lot of players (at busy times), but overall everything runs 100 tick.
