srcds.exe will not run

RIght, followed the instructions up to where it says to run srcds.exe. I thought i would start running it as the GUI first, so I did so, by putting in srcds.exe an the end of the C: etc stuff, as it says to do. Nothing happens. Also tried running srcds from the icon, also nothing. Any clues? I installed CS from steam, not the cd, if that makes a difference
