Brakes without lag
#1
Hi there.
Ive setted up my SRCDS fine, with Admin-Plugin.
Ive a 512kbs upload connection so, ive putted in server.cfg

// bandwidth rates/settings
sv_minrate 0
sv_maxrate 5333
decalfrequency 10
sv_maxupdaterate 66
sv_minupdaterate 10

The tickrate of my server is 66.
When the server is empty i have a 0 - 1 - 2 - 3 choke, when server start having people choke goes to 60 - 70.
I've tried everything, read manuals, big posts, but i must be really dummy because ive tried everything and it still have brakes....
I think is because Choke value goes to high.
Im running the server on a:
P4 3.4HT Machine
1Gb Ram
200GB Disco
512Mb Graphics
Windows Vista Ultimate OS
8024 / 512 Cable Connection

Any Suggestion?
Thanks

What's the amount of maxplayers?

tickrate 66 is way too high for 10 for example, with 66 tick you can run around 4 players.
Tickrate 33 will run 8-10 players depending on the quality of the connection.

The choke youa re getting is from the low sv_maxrate
I suggest a maxrate of 7000 for a 10 player server.

Also on a side note, choke doesn't mean lag, choke will only pull the tickrate down which can result in choke but as long as the tickrate is above 20 you're fine.

Slots: 12
With a 256Kbps upload i used to run a 8 players server very well....
Now with 512Kbps i thought that i could run with 12.
So what i have to do?

reduce the slots to 10, set sv_maxrate to 7000 and run 33 tick. Should be fine then.

i managed to achieve 14 slots with a 512kbps upload connection!

I used rate 6000, 33tick, disabled downloading + uploading of files, disabled ingame mic too.

Please note that "I can run 14 players" is something totally different than actually "running 14 players at reasonable quality".

I can assure you that 12 players really IS the max of a 512kbps connection. I've hosted servers from my house here for 3 years, I've experimented with them including player slots. 8 players is the max without quality loss (meaning no choke, tickrate drops and lagspikes). I can host a 20 player server, no problem, but I'm sure there won't be anyone playing because the quality is low.
for a 12 player server, if you want a good server, you need 768kbps or higher.

ps. I have a 1:1 overbooking ADSL line 700meters from the datacenter, it's a great connection, most people won't ever reach that quality with theirs. (like cable users etc, mostly 20:1 overbooking or more and further away from the center).

Actually the quality of my 14man server is not bad (as you seem to be making out), it seems to be really popular so what does that say? aslong as people enjoy playing on it i do not care about choke etc, and actually choke only reaches 10 max and tickrate does not drop below 20.

Also you cannot assure anyone that 12 is the max, thats an OPINION based on YOUR specifications, not a fact for all people. It matters on the quality of the line on the connection, hops the players have to go through to get to your connection etc...

Also ADSL is known for speeds that vary depending on distance from exchange and peak times most people will reach about a quarter of their speeds. Cable is another story, i have been with NTL/Virgin media since NTLs business started, i have never had trouble with speed loss, and connection is really stable. This has improved again since Virgin Media took over. Again my server has become really popular since i set it up last week, people have fun on it and do not complain about any sort of lag or ping problems, thats all that matters in my opinion.

Problem Solved!
Tickrate 33 and Runs Great with 12 players and choke just goes until 10-12.
Thanks a lot to all.
