Ways to lower bandwidth consumption?
#1
Hi there guys,

I currently have a 10mbit/512kbps connection and i am able to host a 10man server with no lag whatsoever, 12 players is nearly stable, but not enough, i was hoping that with a few tweaks here and there i can get it stable at 12 players....

Are there any commands that can lower bandwidth consumption?
So far i have lowered the updaterate and cmdrate to 20 as anything lower makes players look like their lagging. i disabled upload and downloading of files in the server cfg...

Anything else i can do?

Thanks,
Edward Tobia

what is your rate set to?

no you can't, I have 512 myself and 8 players really is the max without any loss of quality.
Of course you can push it as far as you like to get 12 players in it but it'll lag like shit ingame.

updaterate should really be 33 at least.

updaterate 20 seems fine, no1 has complained about it....i wouldnt use anything lower than 20 though as it makes players look like their lagging....

10 players is fine, 12 is kind of ok but pings start to rise when full...

im using rate 8000 right now, when i go lower the server starts experiencing choke...

of course ingame a player does not always hit the max rate of 8000....

Well if no-one is complaining it's ok but, I would never play in a server with tickrate lower than 33.
Indeed below 20 tick the server will really "lag", people with shock around instead of smoothly move over the map.

You can set your rate lower if you wish, choke doesn't matter a lot at all, it's just a crap number, makes the server look bad into peoples eye's that don't know the effect of choke at all.

From my experiences, a 99 choke server with a tickrate of 33 will run better than a 0 choke server on a lowe tickrate. Ckoke normally makes the tickrate drop a bit, but as long as the tickrate stays at 20+ everything will be fine, in other words nothings wrong with choke as long as it doesn't drop the tickrate below 20.
