I'm rather new to this but so far have had succes install various components etc.
One thing im unsure about is the server ticket rate...
at one stage the server was online and several people join, one in particular player started goin on about my ticket rate?
The situation was i had joined through LAN with a constant 5ms ping, while theirs were all around 400, he was accusing me of lagging them up because of my ticket rate?
If anyone could bluntly outline ticket rates and how they affect my server, it would be appreciated.

Well it seems i was only a few clicks away from an answer after the first post and here we go... High tickrate and rate SRCDS FAQ a very well written tickrate guide i must say,
But one thing i would like to know, how can i check the server tickrate using a client command through console invloving no admin privlages?

there's no real way that i can think of off the top of my head other than setting your rates higher so if you set them to 100 the highest they will go is what the server is set to, ie you set yours to 100, if the server gives 66 or 33 then you know it's 66 or 33.

You can check the server tickrate by doing the follow things on the client:
open up the console and type:
net_graph 3
cl_cmdrate 100
rate 30000
now there will be numbers in the right lower corner of your screen, look at the "in:" line. The last number where it says "100/s" or "33/s" or whatever number is the server tickrate.
about the 5ms ping, it's what they call "rate hacking", you can do this on almost any server by typing cl_cmdrate 10 in your console. This will limit the outgoing package (your tickrate) to 10 per second resulting in a very low ping on the server. However the only one having problems is you beecause your gameplay will not be as smooth as the other players giving you trouble to hit people. This does IN NO WAY affect ANYONE else on the server. Players can NOT lag a server in any way (unless exploits are used etc like real hacks)

Thankyou Dronca,
I had joined the server through LAN which the server and my pc where running on which i'd imagine explains the low ping i had.

Yeah lol I see I forgot to type that line,
People connecting from LAN will always be in the 1-10 ping range

Drocona,
I have my server up and running. (Windows server)
I've tried everything to change my tickrate to my server. For some reason i cant access the srcds.exe it will not open there is an error.
I also tried your suggestion in RE: to creating a shortcut and changing the path, that didnt work either.
I was a little unclear about that, what was i to do after i changed the path? I clicked apply and okay and that was it. I went into the server and it was still set to 33 tick
here is what i put in the target "C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\cherry69\source dedicated server\srcds.exe" -console -tickrate 66 -game cstrike +maxplayers 12 +ip xx.xx.xxx.xxx +hostport 27015 +map de_dust2
I also was told to update my server, but i just downloaded it recently, does it not come with the proper updates? I was told to download hldsupdate tool, but i havent yet. should i do this and will it take care of the error?
very confused could you help.
I was almost sure the shortcut thing would work, but maybe i'm forgetting a step.
sorry,
i forgot to post the error
srcds.exe- Unable to locate component
This application has failed to start because Steam.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.
then i click OK and get this....
Launcer error
Failed to load the launcher dll
the specified module could not be found
But....the server runs great and has been
Also, when i made the shortcut, and changed the path i left it in the source dedicated server folder along with the original exe. is this
correct?

Hi there,
as I read through your post there are loads of errors that should be fixed when you use the hldsupdatetool.
I wrote a guide for Planet Half-Life recently, if you follow that guide it should run like a charm the first time you start it up.
here is the guide:

okay, i've learned some more.
I havent downloaded hldsupdatetool i downloaded source dedicated server from steam, and i just double click the source dedicated server desktop icon to activate the GUI.
I see in my c:\programs\steam\steamapps\cherry69\counterstrike source dedicated\ folder there is a srcds when i double click that is where i get the error i explained above.
Now my question is. can i execute the server in gui mode with a different tick rate with a command?
like
"C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\cherry69\source dedicated server\srcds.exe" -tickrate 66
because i can set all the other settings ( maxplayers, map, ect...)
through the GUI
or do i need to download hldsupdatetool.
I read somewhere that if you want it to run in GUI you don't need to add -console.
just the path and \srcds.exe
but i wanted to add tick rate.

for the steam version you have to right click the dedicated server in steam and go to properties. Then click the "set launch options..." button add -tickrate <number> there and it should work.
when you use hldsupdatetool you can indeed leave out the -console command to run in gui but running console is HIGHLY recommended

Hey one quick thing, i've created a batch file to run srcds in GUI mode.
If i add -tickrate xxx to the batch file will that work or will GUI mode override it?

nope it won't override it, it shouldn't override anything at all.
