Server hardware
#1
Hey all I'm currently looking into getting a box in which I'll b running some dedicated servers on. I'm still not overly knowledgeable about server hardware. I've been told by other company owners that one server per CPU is an ideal condition with a lot of RAM.

I was just wondering what types of setup's other here used and roughly how many server's they could fit on per box (without sacrificing performance.....on either 100 or 66 tick servers).

Thanks in advance. If anyone has any links to places that stock server hardware and what pieces they have would be great.

Try Intel quadcores, 4 x 1,6 Ghz (conroe core) is only about 300 euros, you can easily hold 100 slots @ tr66 and 100 (mixes) on such a cpu (with 2 GB DDR2 ram).

Newegg has a fair selection of affordable server parts, you'll probably want to start out with at least a dual core CPU if you plan to run more then one server. The more ram the better but you don't need 4gb's of ram.

The Intel Quadcore (Clovertown) isn't a bad CPU as it's based off the Core 2 Duo architecture and is still affordable even if it's a tad slow. Try to start with at least 1-2GBs of ram hopefully leaving yourself room to upgrade. Invest in good SATA2 HDDs or SCSI as that will help greatly on map change.

Minimum hardware per server should be a P3 or identical AMD @ 1ghz with 512 RAM. Thats for a 16-18 person server at 66 tick. With that hardware you should be @ 50% CPU with full a server and spike to 85% during multiple heavy gun fights. It all depends on your NIC card and internet connection too.

Reopening the post Big Grin
We are almost 2 years from the start of this tread, and now i have the same question, what do i need.

Is it true srcds only can run on a single core??
If so what should be the min specs to run: 2x 32 slots 100 tick server??
It will be a dedicated server in a data centre, so bandwidth enough.

yes, srcds is not currently multithreaded. what game are we talking about?

For two, thirty-two slot servers a dual core 2.00 ghz would be the bare minimum higher would be much, much, nice Smile. Also there is no real point in running a server with 100 tickrate above 18 slots, you will not see improvement and it will just waste resources.

sounds about right to me.

So at least a 2.0 Ghz core per 32 player server, this should be on 66 tick then as far as i understand, cause of the no improvement on 18+ slots
And 2x 16 slots 100 tick on 1 core?? Then also 2.0 Ghz is the minimum??

Well a good estimate is that for 40 100 tickrate slots the BARE minimum should be a 2.00 ghz CPU. Considering 66 tickrate uses less resources than a 100 tickrate slot, you should be fine Smile.

A little bit more than 60 slots per core.

That server wont handle all of that. I would like to see the cpu usage when the 2 12 slot 100ticks are full.
