fps_max help

Toungue
Hello,

I was wondering is someone coulc give me the low down on what exactly fps_mas does. I am running that srcdsfpsboots.exe on my machine, so from what I have read on these forums, i should be adding fps_max 600 to my server.cfg. I guess my question is, should i add this to the .cfg of ALL the source servers on my machine? I am running 5 - 6 servers. should i break the 600 up between the servers? like fps_max 100 on each of them?

This setting somewhat confuses me.

Thanks

Try putting the fps_max command in your autoexec.cfg instead of server.cfg..... just a thought

Sure,

but, im more concerned with what this command actually does. all of the threads i come across on here discuss how to set the fps_max setting on ONE server. I'd like to know what to do since I am running multiple servers. Can I still do fps_max 600 on every one?

Are you running these servers all off of one computer?

EDIT: (yeah, it might help me to read your initial post again.)

if you are running these 6 or so servers off of one computer, first of all, WOW you have a nice computer. Secondly, are you running multiple instances of the same srcds.exe? or do you have seperate installations of it? If you have multiple installation, i suggest keeping the max_fps for each autoexec.cfg around 200-300 only because youre running so many servers on one computer. FPS is a huge drain on cpu power. Peace out.

fps_max simply limits the frames per second on the server, mostly the higher it is the smoother the server runs.
However FPS numbers above 700 will be fluctuating alot and it will make the server instable, doors won't work normal and stuff like that. Also wierd unexplainable lags.

most servers run at 300 FPS, it's a good standard. I usually take around 500, I have to set fps_max to 800 to get it to 500 (yes fps_max works in mysterious ways.) Just take a look what it does with what value.

because I know you just got that dual core dual xeon machine, try running them at 500 FPS, if the servers are stable around 500 you can keep it, if not set it to 300FPS.

Also make sure you run an FPS booster or WMP if you have windows

Cool, thanks! ill try that. This is a dumb question... how do i monitor the fps of the server? i know how to see MY fps (net_graph) but what about the servers?

Oh ya, I did most of those tweaks on that website that was mentioned in a previous post, including hte FPS booster Smile

you can see the FPS of the server in the green bar of the console (scroll up all the way)
However when you do this the server will not respond to anything, that's why I suggest using the stats command
type "stats" in console and it will show CPU, bandwidth IN/OUT,uptime, users, FPS and players if I'm correct.

You can also log into rcon on a client and type rcon stats, this will do the same only ingame.

When I do the rcon_stats, it shows my fps at around 250, i have it set to 500 in the server.cfg though. Ill try it with it dropped to 300 as u suggested.

My tickrate seem to really drop during spawn on the servers, i have a 5 second freetime which gives it time to get back up to where it should be (66). Im not sure why this happens, both cpu and memory usage arnt even close to being maxed out. i havent even seen them hit 50% yet.

That's the wierd thing about fps_max command, set it to 600 or 700 and the FPS will be 500.

At the start of each round, every server will drop in tick and will mostly show some choke with it. This can also be cause by a low sv_maxrate.

Do you have a recommended sv_maxrate? these are the settings i have for the rates, the servers are all 66 tick;

sv_maxrate 20000
sv_maxupdaterate 110
fps_max 500

by the way, once the tickrate goes back up after the freeze time, it doesnt drop at all really, until the next round start.

you can calculate the maxrate by this:
bandwidth in kbps * 128 / playerslots

if the outcome is above 30k use 30000 becuase that is the max.

Like I said, it's normal for teh tickrate to drop at round restart, it will be stable throughout the game

I changed all the settings are per your math equations Smile

Still getting choke though. I know i can expect choke on deathmatch and gungame servers but i seem to get it on an normal server too. My cpu usage has never exceeded 50% & neither has my physical memory from what i can tell. *shrug* I'll keep doing research on choke. seems like it's impossible to get rid of. The thing is, even though net_graph SHOWS the choke, you dont 'feel' it in the server... weird

You never "feel" choke really.
When you get choke, the tickrate will drop a bit. If the tickrate drops below 20 you will really notice the choke, above it actually doesnt do much at all. It's just a number with a bad feeling tied to it but I've seen servers with 50 choke running 66 tick and it was top quality.
