I'd say windows Wink

but Linux is a wide word, there are so many versions.
If I had to choose I would go for FreeBSD because it's commandline but some Linux versions are too, you get the point?
It's just whatever you like, there is no better than....(most of the time anyways)

I have heard from some GSPs that FreeBSD beats Linux performancewise but I haven't ever used FreeBSD myself.

Though your question is much like asking "What is the best distro" again.

by that I mean you ahve GUI versions of Linux and non-GUI (console)
I prefer console because you don't need the GUI, it just makes the server slower.

FreeBSD seems to be harder to run (so I've heard) but it's better than the rest, but that's just reading and stuff, never tried myself, I'm a windows guy and that beats all Linux/Unix Wink

Just have a try for yourself and figure out which one's best for you.

the only way why srcds runs better on windows is caused by valve developers, they dont fine-tune the binaries for linux servers. even they do that, it will run anyways better on linux as on windows, using less resources and ram as on windows machines ... but valves devs are not interested on this....

Yep, I much rather run on Linux too but the software lacks alot in comparison to windows...

A recompiled Linux kernel that has been tweaked. Usually with 1000MHz polling or whatever that is and uneccessary things removed.
