Horrible lag issues after switching to srcds! HELP!
#1
Sad
Hi

I have been using the built in Source Dedicated Server within steam for some time now. I have been able to log onto that and play (from the same machine) without any problems. I run a small map, 8 people max, on a 33 tick rate.

I recently changed over to the srcds standalone.
Now, I cannot play on my own server. When I connect, the lag is unbearable and unplayable. Sad

I copied over all my old config files, so everything is basically exactly the same--the only difference is the platform.

Can someone please help me?

The standalone uses alot more configuration, the steam one has very little if at all next to maxplayers and some map stuff.

And I've said it before, you should NOT play on the same machine as you host the server on. NEVER! Performance will always decrease no matter what. And besides what's the point? Just run a listen server and you're set too.. without lag.

Well, that's not really true. With the steam one, you can implement the exact same configurations as the standalone. Don't tell me otherwise--I've been doing it for months. You can also run it in console mode, just like the standalone version. You don't have to use the drop-down box/gui stuff.

I was playing on the same machine, also, for months, without any issues. This was with the steam version. Why on earth would the standalone version be any different? The only possible difference I could fathom would be improvements, not degradations.

Yes you can use the same configuration, but the steam one is a bit different, when you use the steam one you will get basic setup, with the standalone you will go much deeper into the cvars. I didn't say you couldnt use the same configuration, just depends on how much you know about it really. I was assuming you were using the GUI steam since almost everyone does that.

The standalone version is much more useful than the steam one. It uses less resources and it has it's own files which is very important. Performance is better on the standalone.

I don't see why you are experiencing trouble now, it should be the other way around. Just make sure the SRCDS get's all the resources and CPU that it needs, check if the FPS is good.

Added the /AboveNormal switch when starting.

Also added +fps_max 800

Anyways, after adding those first two things, seems to work much better now. Smile My assumption is the first thing did the trick, setting it with high processing priority.

Seems there was a change in some update,
the client (game) seems to use up all the resources (higher priority than the server by default)
this way the server doesnt get any, which makes it lag, had 3 people so far with this case.
Thanks for helping figure it out Smile
