The bandwidth is another concern of mine, I dont really have a way to check how much I currently use as they are all rented servrers. Do you know of any way I can find out how much i should have? Everywhere i look seems to be in the 1.5 to 2TB range

bandwidth is hard to measure without charts from your provider, even if you set a max rate of 25000 clients won't use that unless it is necessary. i think i gave this info before somewhere but: say you have a 5v5 on dust2, if you have 1 guy guarding a and the 9 other guys are at b in a firefight, the single guy may only be using 2000kb (if that) while the other 9 could be using anywhere up to your 25000 max. this is composed of world/shot/player updates.

that being said go on over to the serverwiki: http://www.serverwiki.org/index.php/Advanced_Tickrate#Server_Bandwidth_Calculation_for_Dummies and you'll see a chart for what the max usage will be if all players are using the maxrate, that number is the maximum you'll ever use. note that 1Mb/sec is ~330Gb/month, so 2000Gb is ~6Mb or an always full 30slot @25000. given that you won't be using 25000 all the time, you can add more slots but watch your graphs as your provider will either cut you off at 2000Gb (meaning your server just cuts off until the end of the month) or charge you overages (this may/will be a LOT of $$$)

wow, that's good to know. from the looks of those numbers, my servers could easily exceed the 2000GB. I guess my deathmatch server would be the biggest bandwidth hog, i could do away with it though.

I guess my next question would be, why do all these places offer a max of 2000GB if it's so easy to exceed. It's not really worth renting the machine if I can only put on server on it lol. *shrug*

I think i may call defcon tonight and try and get some infor out of them.

by the way, thanks for your help with this! Smile

And again: quadcore Xeon or Opteron, not dual CPU. Also you need at least 2GB ram (scheduled reboot every day) of 4GB ram. 2TB bandwith will do, at least in the beginning.

Hey Guys,

I spoke with rich at defconservers.com & this is what he has available in Chicago.

Dual Xeon 3.4Ghz HT
2 x 3.4Ghz -2x2mb Cache
4GB DDRII 400mhz
SCSI HDD (not sure of size)
2000GB Transfer
$279/month (approx.)

what are the odds of this machine working for me? He unfortunaly doesnt have any quad core machines available in chicago.

how full are your servers? if all are full then you'd get lag during map changes for sure. that's really only 2 procs, hyperthreading doesn't count. what are your pings to texas?

In the late evenings, its not uncommon for my public servers to be near capacity, that's a total of about 70 66tick slots. I expect to see a big drop in traffic though if i make this move, with the ip's changing and all. (major draw back to this whole move).

Im in the east coast of canada, if i ping texas i get high 90's to 100, I wish it wasnt the case because machines seem to be much cheaper to rent there. Also, a lot of my community members are located in canada & in the top of the usa. chicago is deffinatly the best option. I tried pinging some ips in NYC, its a bit better then dallas but its still higher then chi. I get around 70 in nyc and about 40 in CHI.

70 slots at tr66 full will work on a good dual cpu server, but still I prefer a quad cpu system.

OKay, so this is what defcon can offer me in chicago. You think I could do like 80 full slots on either or both of these? Im not really sure what you would consider a 'good' dual cpu server. do the two below qualify? Smile

Dual Xeon 2.8 (Nocona)
2GB Ram
80GB SATA HDD
100mbit Ulink
2000GB Bandwidth

Dual 3.2 Ghz HT (Irwindale)
4GB DDR2 RAM
36GB SCSI HDD
100mbit Uplink
2000GB Bandwidth

Hopefully, this will be my last post, after this comes the purchasing heheh.

P4 will nog work, Dual xeon will. But I would invest in Dual(core) Opteron or Dualcore Xeon (C2D, not the old burt ones).

Okay, so this machine isnt going to give me much room to play with im gathering. Id like to have a machine that can do what's in the first thread, but still have some room to move incase we want to add some more slots or even add another server.

Which of the two options would be best, i seem to be getting mixed information from websites ive been reading;

Quad Core Xeon 5320, Clovertown 1.8Ghz
Dual Core Dual Xeon 5050, Dempsey 4x2mb Cache, 4 x 3.0Ghz Processors w/HT

Thanks again for the help!!! Smile

clovertown will beat dempsey, 53xx is based on the core duo, dempsey is based on presler aka netburst architecture (old and slow even if mhz is faster)

I think im going to go with this now;

Dual Core Dual Xeon 5130,'Woodcrest' 4x2mb Cache
4 x 2.0Ghz Processors
2GB ECC 667 Ram
250GB SATA II HDD
2000GB Transfer

I wasnt planning on getting a machine like this but I guess it will give me some room to grow. This should be able to do what Im looking for without a problem eh?
