Why global ban is dumb
#1
I was recently playing sourceforts in which my friend was added to the global ban list for reason: making a stupid wall. Now my problem is with this global bans it gives people way to much power over players. People should not have control over the game you are playing and if you can play or not. Now the admin of the server is ok to ban due to the fact that the server you are on does not belong to the player or steam but to the person paying for it or the company hosting it. The admins soon tend to get a god complex banning anyone that they dislike from the game. Now, do you think that it is right that a sum amount of persons can have that much control over whether you can play a game or not? I have a feeling that in the future steam will have to step in to prevent everyone from getting banned from admins that think they are right. If they are banning people left in right would Steam not lose money on this? I'm just saying that steam should not allow this so called "global ban list"? What do you guys think?

Admins can ban anyone they want to, as they pay for all the shit and have to controll it.

My personal project, currently affecting 19 servers.

Yes but to say one person gets banned from server due to the admin abusing, that one person has now lost the ability to play on all 19 servers. I just don't think thats right.

I think it's less work for the admins, as less cheaters and lamers can connect.

Don't do it man, you will only be hurting yourself >.< *dramatic music*

But yeah, Global bans is like taking a game and calling it your own. I mean this in which you say who and who can not play. And when I say calling it your own I mean saying hey valve you are useless. Ban the hackers not everyone else.

Sure, first host 20 servers of your own, then you'll start complaining

I mean if you are talking about hackers sure there bad, hey let VAC take care of it. Or if they are hacking VAC undetected then try a different program that catch them and then ban them. I only see the point of the global ban if when you have hackers, but VAC takes good care of that.

Point Hollanda is trying to make is that when you host servers (in this case alot), there are always players that ruin the gameplay and stuff liek that. There are hundreds maybe thousands of reasons you can ban a player for, cheating is only 1 of them and only half is covered by VAC.
Second is that when you have more than 1 server you already have to enter the ban on each server over and over again. With more servers I think you can imagine the pain adding 20 entries for only 1 person.

On the other hand you have to be strict with the moderators, yes if you don't have experienced moderators they will abuse the powers they are granted eventually. I think having a central banlist is good, I've been thinking about making one too since it's just a pain to go through all those damn banlists.
I think the "global" is a bit scary since from what I understand it's only the servers ran by Hollanda.

Well actually the banlist thing is very easy to control, don't give normal admins acces to ban, only via the banlist.

At the moment http://www.globalbans.nl (what's in a name Toungue) secures 20 servers, from 3 communities/clans. Others are welcome to join and submit demo's, which will be reviewed by experienced admins.
