Looking for an experienced server administrator to help write article for PHL
#1
Question
Hello all,

My name is Ben and I am the Content Director at Planet Half-Life. I am interested in publishing a sort of crash-course in administrating various forms of servers for the Half-Life series. In particular, I'd like to have an article for each of these games: Half-Life 2: Deathmatch, CS:S, DoD:S and HLDM. Each article would cover a number of topics, some of which would probably not need much editing between the different articles as the material would be similar. The topics covered in each article would be:
  • Setting up your Server
  • Map Rotation for Maximized Server Use
  • Server Plug-Ins
  • Promoting Your Server
  • Server Administrator Etiquette

I'd imagine that sections like server promotion and administrator etiquette would need minor (if any) adjusting between the games, but the other sections would need to be written from scratch each time as they would be quite different. I am appealing to you, the esteemed SRCDS community, to aid me in accomplishing this. I know next to nothing about running servers, and thus cannot write this on my own.

If you would only be interested in writing on one of the games, that would be totally fine, you don't have to dedicate to writing all of them. You will get full credit for your work, are free to use the article on a resume (GameSpy/IGN/FoxIE is a pretty darn big company and thus articles published on one of its sites is a fairly big deal) and I am open to other requests as well.

If you would be interested (or know anyone who would be interested) in helping me do this, please let me know. You can reach me via email at d3pth_charge[at]planethalflife[dot]com or via ICQ: 263711007.

Note: Writing skills are NOT required! I am the editor and will be editing the final draft anyway, all I care about is knowledge and willingness to help me and the site out!

Thank you so much for reading this, and I look forward to your response greatly!

PS: I apologize if I broke any rules in posting this... note that this is not a commercial advertisement as the work would be voluntary.

You didnt break any rules, I think it's a nice post.
Next 2/3 weeks i have vacation and nothing to do just yet, I might write the CS:Source one and the HL2: DM.
I was also thinking about a guide on installing mods, since that (installing mods like Hidden and gary's mod) topic is a bit vague at the moment.
I will keep you updated when I'm off college and work then I'll try to start writing it Smile

That's great, can't wait. Nelioneil, I can most certainly use the help, however you might want to speak with Drocona about it because I'm not sure exactly what he had in mind for the project. Or, alternately, you could wait till I receive his peice, and then when I have a better idea of what I need for the other articles, I could let you know.

Thanks a lot you guys!

Ok I'm working on it right now, So far I have 2 pages on installation stuff and requirements. Basics of running a dedicated server. Although I have a question for someone that can make it for Linux since I have no experience running Linux servers. So if someone can make an installation guide for Linux powered servers that would be great.

EDIT: I'm also adding screenshots of everything important, to make sure everything is clear to th readers, if that's possible for Linux (if you are using a GUI) that would be great. For command line Linux please include the input/output text.

Doing the Linux install is rather easy, you just have to know the privileges and stuff like that. So if you need it I might be able to help there.

Hello there,

I was just wondering how your article is shaping up? I am quite excited to see it. Do you think you will be finished with it by the end of January?

Yes I'm working on it, by the end of January should be a piece of cake Smile

It's getting quite big too, I'm including screenshots of everything and very precise information,
I've completed the install and configuration part aswell as installing Mani admin plugin.

All together I'm at ~4000 words and 11 pages
