Srcds seem to not be pointing to anything

when i run c:\srcds\srcds.exe -console -game hl2mp +map dm_popped -maxplayers 8 -autoupdate, a window opens for a split second and the closes amd nothing else.
also when i run the srcds short cut the is no games in the drop down list or maps to choose from.

it seems that i need to tell Srcds where to look for game info, but how do i do this?

do i need a server config ? where do i put it? what do i put in it> any links would be great. ta

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't it maybe hl2dm instead of hl2mp?

I think you are wrong, this was in the install tutorial on the first page
"Your srcds is now up and running. (-game hl2mp if it's a HL2DM server ofcourse)"
