you can use a pc as a switch if you run out of router ports.
so one cable goes from the router to the pc in networkcard1
one cable goes from the pc's networkcard2 to the server.

select the two connections in the configurationscreen and make a networkbridge. Then it's connected too.
So the pc need 2 network adapters. that's what I meant

in that case do i need a router at all? can i just like add another network card to the current PC im on. whch is connected directly to the cable modem...then add a 2nd network PC card to this PC..and connect it to the onboard ethernet of the other PC? if this is so.. would there be anything similar to port forwardin that i might have to do? other then creatin the conenction..or just plug it all in and get goin? after makin the connection configuration.

If you connect directly to the modem you dont need any port forwarding.
I use this myself, only I don't serial link my PC's, I use a switch.
Like this:

Internet-->Modem-->Server-->Switch-->LAN

The server is directly connected to the internet in this case and has all ports immediatly on the internet. So no port forwarding.

what kinda switch you recommend?  and if i buy a switch would i need still an extra network card..or can i just use the on board ethernet? ive never used a switch before. so im not sure on this one.

and just to be sure by LAN you mean like any regular computer that uses the internet connection for normal use apart from the server?

Assuming your modem uses an ethernet cable you need 2 network adapters in the server, there rest of the PC's that connect to the switch only need 1.

Yes LAN are all the normal computers that are connected to the internet via the server. You dont have to port forward anything on these ones either, they run perfectly (unless you run Webservers etc on one of these. But any server should be run from the server machine)
