Need some advice
#1
Ok I would like to setup a CS:S server just so I can have my own server, play what map I want, get some private games going with my mates ect ect.

Anyways, I would like to know if this setup would be ok for the server!

800Mhz AMD
512mb RAM
128mb Graphics card
120Gig HDD

I have a choice of either installing XP-Pro or XP-Home, or a version of Linux, I think I have a SUSE Linux 10 CD somewhere. Also im running a 8mb BT Broadband line. The server would be dedicated btw, nothing else would be running on it.

I know its not the best setup for a server but its just an old PC I have laying around. Would I atleast be able to have a 4 v 4 match without lag?

Thanks people! Smile

it will hold 20 players on 33 tick, 8 players will do on 100 tick I think.
That's judging from the computer specs.
There's one more thing, that's your upload bandwidth.
512kbps upload will hold 10 players, 1024kbps (1Mbit) will hold 16 players both on 33 tick.

I'm running an almost similar setup here at my home, it runs winXP Pro

Hmm not too sure what my upload would be tbh. I should have my 8mb line next week sometime, I will find out then. Im only on a 2mb line atm.

What is "tick"? Sorry, im new to CS:S :p

tick is tickrate, it's the amount of updates per second the server will try to send to your clients. Tickrate is 33 standard, you can increase it as you like but the higher it gets the more resources (CPU, RAM) and bandwidth it will use.

So the more updates per second, the smoother your server runs.

Also normally with a 8mbit line you get 1024 or 786 kbps upload speed, if its DSL. Not sure about cable. You can ask your ISP or just do a speedtest thats hosted somewhere close to your residence.
