[SOLVED]Amount Of Players
#1
lo

Being new to running a dedicated server I was hoping some of you more experienced ppl could let me know if Im being over optimistic.

I have recently rented a Dual core Intel 3.4 2GB DDR Ram, 80GB Sata Hard disk dedicated server, and was hoping to run a 32 man CSS server at 66 tick, and a 12 man CSS server at 75 tick.  So far Im having a lot of trouble with the 32 man server, as I cant seem to get to that size.

The kernel has been re-compiled to 1000hz (its linux OS), and the max fps has gone up from 125 when I first got it, to 333 now it has been recompiled.  I have dropped the amount of players to 28, and have the following server rates and start line :

sv_maxupdaterate 66
sv_minupdaterate 20
sv_maxrate 28000
sv_minrate 2000

run -b 1 screen -dmS server1 ./srcds_run -game cstrike +ip 81.19.209.11 +clientport 27001 +port 27015 -sport 27016 +tv_port 27017 -tickrate 66 +fps_max 600 +maxplayers 28 +map de_dust -autoupdate

The only mod being run is the latest mani admin 1.2 beta, and the 12 man server is running on the other core, but is empty.  If I have 28 on the server the CPU usage for its core is peaking at 85%+ which induces round start lagging.  Some ppl are also getting choke of 30+.

Do you think the server hardware is not capable of 32 players, or is it maybe poor set up by myself ?

What maximum player size would you recommand ?

The start line was from the server company, and seems to run the server on one core, would it be better to run it without specifiying this, as when it is peaking at 85%+ the overall CPU is 43%, so lots to spare ?

Many thanks for any help

Dunno for sure but is the CPU running on hyper trading? If so try disabling this (in the bios).

Also but minrate to "10000"

How many fps does the server run on when you perform "rcon stats" ?

hmm not sure, but yea like holanda says Smile

Tryto disable/shut it down, the other server you have asnd get alot friends if possible lol to join your server at 32 slots and check out if you getting lag. If your not then you know your problem which is the other server. If it still contains lag at 32 slots, tryto make it smaller while the other server is on or not, i guess you need to find the right balance.. also add fps_max 1500 into your server.cfg.. will help alot which did whit mine Smile Try also to make it 66tick.

lol

fps_max 1500 doesn't work on server with more than 16 slots. Oh big server server sided you won't get more than 200 fps (and even 100).

The problem isn't the hardware, 3,4 ghz intel should easily hold 32 players (For example: I host 2 x 48 slots BF2142 on a dual xeon 3.2), in the past I hosted 48 slots on a single P4 3.2 Ghz.

if he add's that it will incrase his fps aswell than nothing, or just make fps 1000 or 900, i never said it would give me 1500 fps lol :S.

Dude, dit you even tested if this works? At first this will cost load en bandwith and at second no server with more than 16/18 players wil reach over 100 fps.

Try doing:

"rcon stats"

When your server if full / with less than 16 players. Don't just type it in 1 time but repeat it about 50 times.

Just give me an output on a 30 players server performing "rcon stats" & first start reading before you start flaming

Thank you all for your replies, I hope you can maybe clarify some of these for me :

1. minrate to "10000" --- what will this do, as Im not sure ?

2. I host 2 x 48 slots BF2142 on a dual xeon 3.2 --- do you nice the processes ? I have the kernel recompiled to 1000hz, but the processes are not nice'd (Im a linux noobie too Im afraid, but learning fast) and are at 15 atm.

3. Running stats command in HLSW with 10 ppl on the server shows 333fps with occasional drops to as low as 10fps. not sure if that sounds normal ?

Thanks all

1: minrate keeps a minimal data trasfer rate between clients. which optimizes and smoothens the gameplay.

2: I dunno.

3: the fps drops cause lag, might want to try fix that.

Thank you, I will try the minrate.

I have no idea why the fps drop, and it does indeed cause lag, but not sure how to sort it. I can reduce the player slots which will probably do it, but I thought the hardware was more capable and could handle this many with ease ?

Yes it should indeed, I used to run 50 players @100 tick on a 2.8GHz 1GB RAM, it would run 90%, it was exactly the max for the CPU. Your CPU is much better, higher clock speed and it's dual core.
You might want to check the hyperthreading, it can cause alot of trouble, I think Hollanda said it before too. Try disabling it and see what happens

I shall ask the nice company I rent it from to do just that for me.

many thanks Smile

Not having much luck with this.  They have reverted the kernel to 250hz to try and reduce CPU usage but I have had :

22 players on dust 2 @ 66 tickrate reaching 76% peak on one CPU core and 13 on train @ 66 tickrate reaching 40% peak on the other core. The dust 2 one was lagging with :

server fps = 125 max (this varies while playing as low as 10 fps at times)
sv_maxupdaterate 85
sv_minupdaterate 20
sv_maxrate 20000
sv_minrate 6000

The only mod being mani admin.  I really dont know what to do to improve this, as I keep getting told the hardware should run that easy, but it deffo dont.

The weird thing is I watch the CPU usage with :

top -d 1

and it seems to jump around all over the place. When people say they run at 80% CPU I really could not tell you with this what its runnign at it seems to fluctuate so much, is this normal ?

Any advice would be good Smile

Can't you just install W2K3, that makes running a good srcds server a whole lot easier?
