Well, you need ssh along with (s)ftp access. You can use the sftp access to upload files, sftp clients like winscp can execute commands but it might lock it up. get an ssh client like putty, and try using the same login information as your sftp client using port 22.

you might want to install linux on a machine at your home and try out a bit.

you do not 'need' to install linux on your pc, but it would help if you understand what your working with before you start to work with it.

Just download a distro (Linux version) burn it to a cd, install it on a pc and start folling around with it untill you get the hang of Linux. It's a lot easier since you will then know how Linux works. If you don't know how it works you won't be able to administrate a server or anything like that. You have to know what you are working with before you do something.
Basicly, just search some tutorials on how to install Linux, if you can't get it installed or whatever. Just get some knowledge about what you are doing you know.
