Is this enough?
#1
I have an old Celeron 400 with 512 ram that has been sitting in my closet for awhile. I have a SCSI controller to put in with a 32GB drive.

Would this be enough for a humble 12 man private server?

I have Verizon FIOS with 15down/2up, speakeasy is saying my teat is right on the money. I don't have alot of cash to spend and I hate to throw it away. It still works very well. And my son wants to host a private server for CAL practices.

well, unless you toss in another stick of memory, it might be sluggish on windows, but should be perfect on a CLI linux.

I know nothing of linux. I will just use it as a file server.

I've ran a 20 player server on 6xxMB 1GHz and i was at a total of 400MB memory usage (also had MySQL, Webserver, FTP and others running same time), so I think it won't be a problem running 12.
However what will probably be a problem is that celeron. I had a celeron like 2 years ago, it already had trouble running a gameserver of C&C Renegade. You can try ofcourse, it might have enough power, you never know with celeron. Just give it a try, who knows it might just work fine Smile

The motherboard only supports 512 ram. So it maybe a case of spinning wheels syndrome.

I have however come into a P4 2.4 with 1 gig of ram.

Server Spec would be as follows:

P4 2.4b
1GB Ram
SCSI U160 Controller
36.7 GB U160 HD
Onboard 10/100 nic

I have Verizon FIOs with 15down/2up

With those specs how many slots could I run comfortably. And if possible, Please give an example of setting you would use IE rate, Cl_updaterate, cl_cmdrate, sv_maxrate, sv_minrate, and so on.

Thanks for all the help so far.

Oh it will be Windows 2003 Server.

The server specs should be enough for 40 players on 100 tick.
However your bandwidth allows you to have something like 2x 16slot servers

cl_xxxx and rate are all client commands, these do not work on the server.
sv_maxrate depends on how may players you want to host, calculate it by this formula:
BW * 128 / SL
BW= Upload bandwidth in kbps
SL= amount of slots you wish to run (players)

sv_minrate of 5000 will keep 56k away, set it to 1000 to allow them to play.
sv_maxupdaterate 100
sv_minupdaterate 20

Thanks for the reply, Maybe have a 16 man on the side incase of scrims for my son. When that happens, I will just shut the 16 man down.
