lag/internet connection settings maxrate, minrate, etc.

What do you think about this configuration below and can you explain the settings to me? The game is Half Life 2 DM, if that matters.

My current settings:

sv_maxupdaterate 15
sv_minupdaterate 5
sv_maxrate 7500
sv_minrate 0
sv_maxunlag 1 //in seconds

My comp/internet specs:

420kb upload
2.4 cpu
1gig ram
8 slots

Now I have heard that to get maxupdate and maxrate, you should use these formula:

1)  kbupload   X   128    divided by number of slots  =  maxrate

2) maxrate   divided by   half your ram  = maxupdaterate

I have also heard people say to set minrate to 0 so dial up people could play. I had been setting this to 4000 in the hopes that it would keep them off the server. My thinking is that if they have lag, they will leave. But I don’t know if that works and I might be misunderstanding this minrate command. What do you know about it?

Also, I don’t understand the maxunlag setting, and I haven’t seen any people change this from the default setting?  What do you know about it?

Thank you!!!!!

Rates & amount of players mostly have to do with you bandwith (which is not much...).

Your ram is more than enough for the bandwith available.

ok here's how I do it, I think it's a bit better than you have right now.

sv_maxupdaterate 100
(you can do this because it's limited by the server tickrate so it automatically adjusts)

sv_minupdaterate 20
(I always set it to 20 because from my experience i know that when it goes below 20 the client starts to lag)

sv_maxrate 7500
(I don't know how you got to this number, depends on how many players. The formula is correct altho it doesn't have anything to do with RAM or anything like that. also upload is in kBIT/s and not kBYTES/s. Be sure not to mix those up. 420kb you told me I think is kBIT so you got it correct.)

sv_minrate 4000
(yes 4000 is good and will keep the 56k users away, this is because the minrate is the minimum data flow to the client, 56k users have to use less but that's not allowed. Also always set it to something, don't use 0, your server might go whacky.)

sv_maxunlag 1
(I'm not 100% sure about this one but I think it's a setting for the server to make the game smoother and "predict" where players are going. I never really tested it but that's about what it should do.)

maxupdaterate formula is complete bull Smile It doesnt make any sence .
Here's how it works:
always keep your maxupdaterate on 100 since it's limited by the tickrate. example: your tickrate is 33 (default) it will use a maxupdaterate of 33, but you set it to 100. When you use 66 tickrate it will use 66 etc etc for every tick you run.

Again, these are the ways I run my servers, it never failed me after 2 years of servers Smile

Thanks for the replies guys. I guess I should have mentioned that in my command line to run the server I was using the -tickrate 66. So should I set it to 33 then, or remove the 66 so that it will use the default 33 tickrate?

Thanks.

yes 420kbps is not nearly enough to run a decent amount of players on 66 tick, you can remove the tickrate command or set it to 33.

Half Life 2 is definitely more demanding, and I have never had more than 4 people come into my server at one time. With just 4 people the server runs good though at 66.

I used to run servers for Serious Sam and Action Half Life, two very undemanding games. I had the best server running for those games, and 420kb was more than adequate for 8 people. But now that I am getting into these new games, I really have to post messages and do testing Smile

I prefer to run small/medium maps though, and I only play DM with no Teamplay, so if it gets bad, I can drop the slots to 6.

Thanks for all the help.
