Half Life Deathmatch Source dedicated server problems
#1
When I try to run the server, I get the following error:

num_for_edict: bad pointer

Here is a screenshot so you can see what happens:

It looks like it is trying to start Half Life and not HLDM Source. Here is my command line:

C:\hl2server\srcds.exe -console -game hl1mp +exec server.cfg +map stalkyard

I am not a novice to setting up dedicated servers. I have done so successfully for Action Half Life, Gunman Chronicles, DoD, TFC, Half Life 1, and others. But for some reason I just can't get this Half Life DM Source to run any other way except as a listen server.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. THANKS!

this is for the source engine and appears to be in windows, i am moving this to srcds win32.

As for your error, im not sure, check steam forums or the mailing list.

are you sure it's "-game hl1mp" and not hl2mp or something like that? i haven't run it myself but it makes sense to check that.

no, valve released the classic DeathMatch under the source engine. so its the old hldm with a new look, not the current hldm

You have to install it first, that error means that mod isnt installed on the server.

Hello guys. I did install it. I had that hl2mp folder and all the other ones from Half Life Source, which is the single player game associated with hl2 dm source. The game was installed, as much as Steam/Valve lets a player install it that is. I still got the error listed in my original post. I even tried copying all the files from every folder into one single folder, but still got the error. I had some extractor program and extracted all the files from the game's gcf but that didn't work either.

So then I deleted everything except the hl1mp folder just in case my game was getting confused Smile That gave me the error about not being able to find the launcher dll.

I know there must be some way to do this though because there are 2 dedicated servers up being hosted by some hosting company. The other 3 servers up are all listen servers though.

I am shocked how many people are actually trying to play this game. The number of people coming to my listen server really makes want to get this dedicated server up and running. Valve/Steam is not supporting this game though, and you can play it free online. So I never expected great things from it as far as funcionality is concerned. But from my readings, the dedicated server issue is the most complained about problem with this game. It is not just me that can't get it fixed.

BTW, the hl2mp folder is for Half Life 2 DM. I have no trouble at all running that game server!

Thanks for the help Cryotec. Yea, that is the way three guys I know said they had done it. But they must have done some other step they are not telling me. Also, their servers are not able to run as Steam Vac secured, so their process is not without problems.

And if you have to extract/copy files from two different games to get a dedicated server runing, that is really a bad sign. I am moving on. I can't spend any more time on this

Thank you very much for taking time to research that for me.

CYA!

If they can't get them vac secured, chances are they're running 64bit. valve has pretty much no support for 64bit, and VAC2 does NOT work under 64bit.

For those of you trying to set up the half life deathmatch source dedicated server by extracting your half life source and half life source deathmatch gcf files...........

If yuu get the following error:

num_for_edict: bad pointer

Here is a screenshot so you can see what happens:

It is because you did not overwrite your bin folder in your server directory. Make sure you take the files/folders properly out of the half life deathmatch source gcf file and copy them to your server folder. You might also just want to copy manually the bin folder (the one with all the dlls) from the gcf and put them directly into the main bin folder in your server directory.

I did that, even without extracting the gcf from the main half life source game, and the server still started right up.

I hate to resurrect an old thread but has anyone been able to get a Half-Life Deathmatch Source server running since the orangebox update of HL2DM?

Use episode1 to download the source engine, not hl2mp.

Oh, and this thread is older than Justin Beiber btw.
Looking for a game server? Visit fullfrag.com and pick one up as low as $2.50 / mo!
