How Many players/tick rate etc..? is it secure?
#1
hello -

i have some few questions.
Here comes first - If i run a dedicated server Via. Internet and i let it on 24/7 should i be afraid for hackers? Is it really so easy to hack a server?
----------------------
Also another question i have...
I have 1024/256 Internet
2.8 GHz - Intel Celeron
----------------------
how many players could i run on it? If i wont be able to run a server whit many players i will upgrade to 1024/1024 - and what tickrate should i have?
remember.. its not a computer were i play on at same time, will be a computer who will be on 24/7 so players can play on it -

Bonsai..

With a good secure router and proper firewalls, you should be safe.

You should upgrade your internet, 256kbps could probably run about 4-6 players even on 33 tick.

I recommend probably a 66 tick, you MAY because to do 16-20 players with that though i could be wrong. How much memory does the server have?

I am most definatly sure that you shouldn't be afraid of any hackers. There is no possible way someone can hack a server. Hacks are only for client sides. When it comes to banning people, ban them by ID because IP Addresses can be renewed over and over again. Make sure you set a rcon_password in your server.cfg, make it random. It rarely happens when it comes to taking over rcon by figuring out passwords, but it can be done. Nothing to worry about.

D'darrio, Hacking and cheating are 2 different things.
Hacking is always possible, there will always be ways to bring down a pc or do bad stuff to it, but as long as your un good firwalls and other protection stuff chances you get hacked are small.
Cheating is just annoying, simple ban will keep them out. Cheats cannot harm a serv.

some cheats/ingame hacks have been known to crash a server, though this is known as exploiting.

Yeah but in the latest updates all these seem to be resolved for the source engine. I've never seen someone crash a server my whole source life anyways. I've had alot of threats about ppl gonna crash my server. I always said, go ahead, try it. It never happened.

My point exactly. Most source speed hacks will crash a server, or lag it up. And Especailly for 1.6.

meh, yea i know for awhile there was this one exploit that got really popular and it would crash a css server, it got to the point where it happened atleast 2 times a day on one of my servers, until valve fixed it. That was a long while ago.

It is aways possible to hack a server though, even with good firewalls, if its online, and somone wants in bad enough they can do it. Nothing is "un-hackable". Game servers though are more or less pointless for someone to hack into the system, there not as fun as like webservers, or email servers or stuff like that. So really, with a simple firewall you should able to keep the people out that try to hack servers just for the fun of it.

Cheating on the other hand will happen. theres really no way at all to stop that. Some cheats may crash the server, but as long as you have something to restart the server, its only a minor set back.

You can try 66 tick and see how it runs. if its still bad, either upgrade or go 33. and your server should auto restart on a crash, mine does.

i tryed 66 tick.. and its only getting more bad! - So took down to 33 again.. And also, i run the server via my own network and it normally have 10 slots, when its full 10 players in it.. it run OK.. allitle lag, but people dont complain much. And thats why i dont know if it someday crashes... how can i make it restart automaticly if it crashes!?!(it have never crashed before, server has bin on for about 3 mounths now) - If i would upgrade to 1024/1024 would i be able to hold 20 or 32 slots server? Since my server is allmost full evryday

Bonsaii!

you're running 10 slots on 256k? that will be a lagfest. 256k is good for 4 players maybe 6 in low maxrate.

1024 will hold about 16 players
