Major Lag Spike
#1
I've been working with servers for along time. But there has always been one problem that I have not seem to figure out. When ever the 6th player joins a game, people start to experience FPS problems. Then they experience their characters arms fly to different positions than the camera, they will lag for about 30 seconds to over 300-600 ping. After that, it seems fine. All my other friends have the same problem. Here is my server.cfg:

Let get some more information on the situation, server specs and bandwidth perhaps?

also a list of plugins will help too.

i assume its 500kbit and not 500kbyte/sec

That is a limiting factor, are you running 100 tick? 66 tick? or 33 tick?

If you dont set sv_maxrate you will be well over yoour maximum uplaod speed with 6 players.
As cryotek asked, waht tickrate are you running

Sorry for not displaying my Tickrate and such.
My Tickrate is about 77. I assume it wouldn't hurt to lower it.
And I've messed around with sv_maxrate, it only makes it worse. The Choke ranges to 100 if it is set. Probably because I've either set it too low, or set it too high. What would be a reasonable maxrate.

Well if you set it too high and with only 500kbps you're going to get choke. try 66, your cpu isn't that great.

What is your current sv_maxrate?

It is located above in the server.cfg I displayed.

Setting it to 0 is not the best thing, your server can only send 62.5KB/sec and sv_maxrate is the amount of data a client can request from the server, try setting it to hmm, around 4000 and see how that fairs out. you can probably do the sv_minrate to about 1000-2000 Your upload is really hurting your server.

edit: i noticed you have 2 sv_maxupdaterate i assume you meant the 33 to be sv_minupdaterate might wanna change that as well Toungue

If you run a 66 tick your server will hold a max of 4 players. the higher you set the tick, the higher your sv_maxrate should be, but since you don't have enough upload bandwidth, I suggest running a 33 tick for 8-10 players with a sv_maxrate of 7000, this is how I run my server on 512 kbps

Yeah, you're still in the ~60kB/sec which can really hurt your server, if possible see if you can get a service increase, maybe around 1mbps

edit: haha 1000th post im catching up to you skeletor Toungue
