Which Football Stats Actually Tell You How Well a Team Is Playing?
#1
League position doesn't always tell the full story, especially early in a season. Which statistics do you find most useful for judging actual performance—xG, possession, shots on target, recent form, or something else?

Reviving this thread because I think xG is useful but can be misleading in small samples. Shots on target matter more than possession, but I also look at big chances created and defensive stats like passes allowed per defensive action. What stat do you find most reliable when comparing teams early in the season?

I focus on expected goals (xG) and shots on target to see past luck. I personally check https://rubiscore.com/ for live xG, player ratings, and form tables — it keeps my analysis grounded without relying on league standings. Their free stats help me spot real performance trends early in the season.
