I need to clean up a folder containing several thousand files, and doing them individually obviously isn’t realistic. My concern is accidentally creating duplicate names or applying the wrong pattern and then having no easy way back. How do you normally approach a large rename job safely? Preview everything first, make a backup, test on a smaller folder?

Jumping in on this older post because this is a great question that still matters. I usually run a quick dry-run with a script that prints new names without actually renaming, then check for duplicates. For safety, I also zip the whole folder first. Have you tried a tool like Bulk Rename Utility or PowerRename? What makes you most nervous—messing up the pattern or losing the original names?
