Ports

Hello i have srcds running and working a dedicated server over my LAN but i am looking to put it aacessible voer the internet instead and someone has told me that i need to open ports on my router but i know that this can sometimes leave me open to hackers. Is there a way i can put it the other site of my router so that firewall still protects me from intruders. Please email waterbird4@hotmail.com if you are willing to give me step by step guide or just post a quick reply to this thread. Thanks in advance.

You're only opening certain ports. not every port. Your router is not your firewall, unless your router has a built in wall(which normally isn't that good anyways) You must allow any firewalls running(software wise or router wise(if any) that is running on the same box as the srcds server) in bound and out bound access to the server, otherwise it'll drop all connections. You must go through your routers gateway and forward needed ports forsrcds. You can find the tutorials for your specific router here -> http://www.portforward.com

Unless you hack yourself the chance of being "hacked" is less than 0.00001% I wouldn't worry about it too much.

If you behave on the net hackers are like a myth

Sure, you ever had an server on an open line (no firewall/router, alle ports open)?

Well to be honest, I've been running my server without any protection at all for about 6 months now, I am tracking incoming stuff etc, no hack attempts at all (just some portscans but hey..that's not even close to hacking). Before, with protection I had a total of 1 noob attempt which was doomed anyways, even if it wasn't protected at all

NOTE: This server is connected DIRECTLY to the internet with a modem, so all ports are open and there's no firewalls.
