linux source problem
#1
NOTE: this problem is occurring to cs_militia and some other maps, not all maps.

I have tested this across Fedora Core 2,3 CentOS 3 and 4, Redhat 8 and 9 and all give the exact same errors.
I am clueless what to do and starting to think steam might be to blame on a recent update for linux only.

FRESH install of counter-strike source
used: ./steam -command update -game "counter-strike source"
with no files present

Error when running server is this:
./srcds_run -game cstrike +ip 205.134.230.182 -port 27016 +map de_dust +maxplayers 12

MISSING MATERIALS AND OTHER FILES? HOW CAN THIS BE
I just did a fresh install, I also did an update with -verify and its all up to date

I tested across other machines to make sure it wasnt a specific linux OS problem, happens to any and all my linux machines, fresh installs, old installs, you name it, steam reports this on cs_militia.

cs_militia.bsp
file size: 25173348
date: Jul 13
time: 17:05

ADDITIONAL INFO:

running steam update with verify ALWAYS re-downloads cs_militia, even though it just previously did it.
there's something really wrong with that map, the downloaded version of the linux server differs from that the clients all have so nobody can connect and play.
What the hell steam?

Is this problem going to be fixed for linux or am I to abandon HL2 Counter-Source hosting completely for linux?

I can see all the windows boxes are working.

Furthermore: If I take cs_militia off the newly downloaded linux server and put it into my own /steamapps/hl2/cstrike/maps/ area and then try to connect, I CAN!
But, that is the wrong map. No clients get this map version, only the linux server.

Try redownloading the hldsupdatetool.bin again, perhaps you got faulty or corrupted version when you first got it.

Try a wget right onto your linux box in case you used ftp the first time which might have corrupted the file.

Just put the map from the client on it.

Also, there aren't any missing materials, it's just proxy's, that means they are no REAL materials, just placeholders. Nothing changes ingame, happens on alot of maps.

I finally came to the conclusion that something is wrong for Linux AMD only, I could get it all to work on my other Linux systems, but AMD having run hlds_run > hlds_amd (instead of hlds_i686) kept failing.

Steam just killed AMD processes of linux for working with these HL2 source maps.

I went as far as copying working directories from one machine to the next, fresh installs from new updatetools, nothing.
Always worked on non-AMD, AMD always failed to load cs_militia with the answer "your map differs from the server".

Autoupdate kept re-downloading cs_militia like it wasn't already there, every single time, map change, restarts. (FOR AMD ONLY)

I think Its safe to say that there's a problem with AMD Linux Steam, given fresh installs dont work for certain maps, however play fine for most maps. MOST isn't good enough

I will not be renting HL2 mods on AMD machines anymore, had to send back some refunds.
This is not the first time steam has done something like this, im not surprised really.
Steam is a horrible company to not support certain processors, whats next. It's just simple backwards compatibility STEAM!

*Cough.Intel.Cough* lmao just a joke...

Hmm on how much i don't like AMD, i would say it couldn't be a AMD Problem. Have you tested your Memory out and HardDrive? You should download MemTest and test your Memory in case of bad blocks, also test your HD out too.

If every thing comes back ok, i would say try a different flavor of Linux (Slackware, ubuntu) or you can install FreeBSD.

Oh yea, this came to mind. If it's a AMD does it have 64-bit? And yes are you installing the x86 64bit ver that is compatible to AMD64?

That would be a total waste of time since there is no 64bit SRCDS Wink

Very true Drocona, but also it would be a waste of money for not taking advantage of 64bit OS. Wink

Yeh if you have other 64bit compatible stuff running on it then go for 64 bit. It's faster, ofcourse, as long as you have 64bit versions of everything.

NOTE: You can run 32bit on 64bit, it just wont use the 64bit. Example: if your server is 64bit and the operating system in too, you have a 64bit webserver, FTP, all that kind of stuff and a SRCDS on 32bit.
