port, and Rcon issue
#1
ok well i have my server running fine, 10 man 100 tic, its all great. now i have managed to iron out all of the kinks save for two. i cannot get it to stay on a certain port. i have added the -port 27015 command line switch and it wont hold that port, it will randomly switch to another port. i have 27015 correctly forwarded in my router, its also open in the windows firewall.

second issue that i am having is with other people logging into rcon. if i connect to this server over lan (via the lan tab in my CS:S game browser) i can log into rcon fine. now if i connect to the server via the IP i cannot log in. it gives me the "Cannot connect to remote server" error. i have also tried the rcon_addres command, and it does not work either. When i give other people the rcon password, and they attmept to login it also gives them the "Could Not Connect To Remote Server" error.

so any light anyone could shed on these two issues that i am hjaving would be great. as these are two seeminly minor things, but are actually proving to be quite a hassel for my clan Sad

For rcon on to work you need port 27015 TCP Open, you might have it open since Source needs 27015 UDP to run. Dont think im bein an ass but why do you have your tic so high. Do you even know what it is? Vavle states that 100 tic and higher is when you start seein problems. Plus you need ALOT of processor power to run a real 100 tic, not to mention havin all the rates settings right. As for your server constantly switchin ports, what type of router do you have?

im running dual opteron 248's 8Gb ram.... i have MORE than enough power to run a 100 tic server, and yes i have all the rates set correctly.

i will try opening TCP 27015 and see if that helps. though i think its partially iv got teh ticrate down, that is no issue, just rcon, and the port, its running through a D-line 604 router, i have UDP27015 correctly forwarded. Sad i really need to figure this out.

Im betting its your router, I was tryin to help someone else with a d-link router. Theyre not that great. I always hear about probs people are havin with SourceDS and any D-link router. I would try a linksys router if ur gonna go that route.

If people would just destroy all routers and pull their old dusty pc out of the storage room, connect it directly with a modem and put a switch behind it the whole server world would better off.

If i could calculate how much time I spent explaining router stuff and getting them configured correctly... sjeez... I get sick thinking of it.

20$ and a old PC will get your server and network up and running in about 5 clicks on that pc

Yeah hardwired modems do work the best. Such good advice, but when you have 3 pcs, xbox 360, xbox, and a psp all hooked to the net, it's kinda not possible Smile

Theres nothing I think it could be. You would just need a whole new router. D-link is not user friendly if youre wanting to run a game server that requires more then 2 ports to be forwarded. Look at all the posts on the forums of people havin probs with d-link. I would drop that router and go buy a linksys.

router.... hmm never had an issue with a D-Link before..... i think its a flaw in srcds, not being able to bind to a port. i will fiddle around with it some more i guess Sad

It's not even a flaw in SRCDS. Go to portforward.com and read about that router. To start with, most of the routers there isnt even enuff room to forward all the ports so you have to DMZ the host, and who likes doin that. What i said wasnt an opinion, It's not really a fact, but it's proven, that D-link routers have lots of troubles with SRCDS. And not the other way around.

Thats why you should buy a switch and put it behind the server. I currently have an 8 port Gbps switch behind it and can easily put another one in.
can serve internet for over 256 computers, now the Gbps switch is expensive but you cna easily get a 8 port 100mbps switch for 20$.

This method is almost exactly the same as a normal router only the router is torn into pieces. You can run anything you like on your own made router!

There are wireless switches too, actually it works exactly the same:

router contains: modem to conenct the internet - processor to "know" where to send stuff - switch that sends it into the correct UTP cable or when whireless sends it to the right PC adress.
Switch setup (all "loose" parts): modem pluged into the server, server is the processor and knows where everything goes, then sends it to the switch plugged into the server which sends it to te correct PC again.

it works exactly the same as a normal router, except that you expanded the router processor with a server, which can run webservers,FTP,SRCDS and all without even bothering to look at ports, it's directly conencted.

Just like with routers you have wireless switches and normal switches. Switches are also much cheaper because the modem and the processor are not in there.

Here's the setups, both router and switch:

Internet--------->router----------->PC's or other devices on LAN

Internet--------->server----------->switch----------->LAN devices.

here you cna see that the server is both on the WAN ánd the LAN and everything is accessible. One major advantage with the server is that you don't have to worry about port forwarding and you can customize all your security with firewalls etc. The LAN is much more safe with a server infront.

this is happeneing to me.
it says its up and connect to steam,
all ports for css and steam are forwarded
and my friedns say its not responding in the steam favorites menu!
for some stupid reason my external port changes RANDOMLY. i forwarded 192.168.2.16:27015 port to **.***.**.***:27015. etc. then when i search it under gametiger it says its up but has a different port for external.....

ALSO game-monitor.com doesnt find it,

USING ZYXEL Prestige 334W. their website says"
"Great for game servers!"

AAHHHHHHHHHH!
