multiple instances - best solution?
#1
Hi all,

I am trying to make a decision between 3 diff setups :

1. a full install for each instance
2. symlinks for each instance
3. all in the same basket, just diff config files

I would also be able to use mani-admin-plugin, please take this into account

example directory structures...

1. a full install for each instance

/home/srcds1
/home/srcds2
/home/srcds3
etc...

2. symlinks for each instance

/home/srcds

/home/srcds1 --> symlinks to /home/srcds
/home/srcds2 --> symlinks to /home/srcds
/home/srcds3 --> symlinks to /home/srcds
etc...

3. all in the same basket, just diff config files

/home/srcds --> contains everything

/home/srcds1 --> contains all config files and startup scripts
/home/srcds2 --> contains all config files and startup scripts
/home/srcds3 --> contains all config files and startup scripts
etc...

Well if space isn't an issue, I would just go with the first setup. It would be the easiest to set up, and maintain. Just download all the files, and copy them to the other folders.

space isnt much of an issue since you do not run 10 instance off a P4...

my concern is that it will update each instance... at once ?! if im auto-update...

but that might not be an issue, if updates are small...

Well im not that familar with linux, but I would take out the autoupdate, set up some sort of script that auto checks for updates at specific times, or whenever you run the script, either way. and that will keep an extra installation uptodate. Then you can just copy them files over to the other directorys. I have heard of programs that will automatically replace files that have a newer timestamp. I can't remember the program though. Cryotek on here knows a bit more about linux, he may have an idea, although I don't think I have seen him on lately :\...

I think regardless though updates are going to be kind of a pain. Some updates are small though, just like the server.dll file, or some textures. The main time it would be a big update is when they release another map, or more models or something. So it may not be to big of an issue all the server updateing themselves at the same time. If its on a decent connection, steam's servers are usually bogged down making downloads slow anyways, lol.
