HL2 Skins in Counter Strike Source ?
#1
Well .. some guy said that he visited a server, and without downloading anything, he saw an admin with a Gman skin if u ppl know what that is(an hl2 skin). Well i tryed to make the text files point to the hl2/models/humans << folder but couldnt do that ...

normal thing u would have in a skin text file in mani admin :
models/player/bla/bla
i tryed :
../hl2/models/humans/blabla
... Which didnt work and crashed the server.

So is there a way to run those skins on a CS:S Server ? cause that would mean no download for clients since the files are already there....

Are they compatible in the first place ?

here is a link to mani's page where i saw someone saying that :

i wouldn't think that would work. although it does give you all them models with a standard server download in the hl2 folder, which is kinda od actually. a lot of them are just wasted space. thes best im gonna be able to tell you is just to play with it, try to figure it out. although usually everything specified like that is takin from the cstrike directory. maybe try and find out what server that was on, and go ask them, lol no one would know better then the one who did it.

right now i don't really have much time to experiment, or i would.

if its no way then its no way ... if it can be done .. tell me how Smile many ppl will benefit ..
Me as an Admin and players on the server ... Skins take too much time to download

eh not really, if you are using sv_downloadurl and have the skins bziped, they don't take much time at all. i used to run skins back when i had webspace, and i had about 6 different skins and they all would download in about 30 seconds. but i don't have webspace anymore, lol.

hmm , i never tryed using sv_downloadurl :
so do i put everything there or just the skins ?
and do they have to be bziped ? not any other format ?
a step by step guide will be nice, or a link to 1.

heres one thats stickied in the tutorial section written by darkzealot.

everything doesn't have to be bziped, really just the bsp files, they are the most compressed, but i also bziped the bigger skins, most materials and models are so small in size bzipping them doesn't help much, and ends up taking the same amount of time cuz the clients computer has to uncompress the file.

BZIP for sure...

maps
skins
files 5+ Megz

BZIP if you wish...

sounds
materials
map adverts

The smaller files wont bzip as much, but you can save a lot of space with maps...

de_alivemetal before => 9,48Mb
de_alivemetal after => 4,09Mb

BIG IMPACT on your files! Cut the file save by about 50 %! So bzip is very nice. Improvements in size are seen around 2-3 Megs, when bziped the end up around 1 meg. So use that as a guide line

You probably saw LDuke's Model Changer plugin at work, which was integrated into Mani quite a while ago. It allows you to select whatever skins you want and you can also set your admins to a special skin as well. Some skins dont' require downloads (as I recall) if they're already HL2-based skins, but you can set the skins to whatever you want if you decompile/recompile them properly for the mod.

lol egg i didn't see you posted this awhile ago, but yea. free webspace that allows sv_downloadurl hosting isn't very common. most free webspaces don't actually expect you to be able to use any amount of resources, and sv_downloadurl uses a TON.

and yes, everything has to be on the webserver. no matter how big or small. cuz once you set sv_downloadurl nothing will download from the gameserver, all custom content will download straight from the webspace. of course the actual server files themselves don't have to be on the webserver, just any custom maps, materials, sounds anything like that. you just don't have to bzip it all Big Grin but you should atleast bzip the maps, it makes a huge difference on the maps.

res files.. are a pain in my but, lol. all you need a res file for is custom sounds, and materials. they should look like the following though
Code:
"resources"
{
"sound/folder/file.wav" "file"
"moreblah blah" "file"
}
something like that. listing all the custom files, per map that you want to download.

I recommend that if you are going to bzip files, you bzip them all. I've seen several admins have issues with bzip'd files when they only partially bzip the download content. It's better to make it all or nothing to avoid issues.

lol the only problem with bziping small files, is that it will actually increase the download time in some cases, because the client has to uncompress it. i have never heard of having problems with bzipping some files and not others. they probly had other errors that was making it not work. i have done this many times and its always workd fine. usually i just bzip all the bsp files.
