CPU Usage is very high
#1
Here is my specs:

AMD64 3200+ Venice @ 2750 Mhz
1gb (512x2) Ram
36gb WD Raptor

3000 kb/s download
512kb/s upload

Tickrate is 66

I have a 10 Player Server

It gets up to 100% when it gets close to full and i dont play on this computer either. i have the ping boost program running too.

I scanned for spyware and viruses and nothing.

I ran this same exact config on another computer (1.2ghz AMD 384mb ram) and i had no cpu usage this high.

What seems to be the problem?

oh and also to add, this happens after about 30 minutes.

well i don't think this little thing would make the cpu jump, but runnin a 66tick server with a maxupdaterate of 20 has to cause some gameplay problems, like choke.

but for the cpu usage does it do it on certain maps? cuz i know the new maps use up more cpu and memory usage. and what priority is the server running at?

i put the priority on above normal. I even tried high and real time and no change. Also i set the maxupdaterate to 66 and still the same. And remember, this happens like 30 minutes after the server is up. Ao for the first 30 minutes, everything is perfectly normal.

I have the same Problem,

AMD Athlon 64 2800+
1 GB RAM

I was running my server (33 tick, 12 person, small maps) on Windows XP 32 and it was running smooth with CPU usage only reaching 14 at max and I even play on the same PC and all runs smooth. I then Installed Windows XP 64 bit and ran the server and CPU usage increments and rises by the minute till it reaches 100%.

The first installation of Windows XP 32 was done by someone else, so when i formated the system (cause some bad Gigabyte software damaged my sound), and installed again .. i got the SAME PROBLEM in WINDOWS XP 32 ... i thought the problem was that the server wasn't compatible with win 64 but i guess there is something missing...

nforce 3 << installed the Drivers
AMD Proccessor << installed the Drivers

i guess we should try installing the old proccessor drivers and see what happens! the ones in the CD ?

4 Bots are constantly playing on the server. The CPU Usage is 15% max at that time. But When players join it starts increasing .. !! i'm running fps_max 1000 which only reaches 500 , i dont think that is the reason cause b4 it was running fine.

take the bots out and see what happens. Also, is this a plain server? i.e no /addons/?

Well i fixed my problem. I just formatted and reinstalled everything.

Now that you reinstalled, if you had plugins in or whatnot, add them back in ONE AT A TIME!

It will save your time in the long run when trying to figure out what ever happens to your server say when Valve updates it.

If u read my story , Formatting was the door to all my problems lol. did u make a new server from scratch ?
cause i used my old server files...

offcourse i have plugins .. can't live without them

Meta Mod
Mani Admin
Mattie eventscprits

What do u guys suggest i do ?...

Bots are there only when ppl arnt, they are on auto_vacate 1 so whenever someone joins they are kicked ...

i also tryed lowering fps_max to 200 or 300 or even 60 ... no differance

it is ok for a while .. then CPU usage is = 100% for some dumb reason.

if you installed windows xp yourself.. did you install all the drivers? like for your motherboard, chipset and all that stuff. do you have experience in installing windows, its pretty easy to do, but if you don't know what your doing, its pretty easy to mess up.

also, when you install windows, did you just put the cd in, let that window open and click install? cuz doin it that way i have never ended up with decent system performance. you have to boot the computer off the cd and usually what i do is delete the existing partition, and create a new one, and do a full format, just to make sure the hard drive gets completley clear of all the "junk" and fragmented files that could slow a system down.

Well .. i have my BA in Business Info Tech. so yes i do have experience .. and i've worked as a system analyst... And yes I did boot from CD Deleted the partition > made a full format and installed all the drievers ... the old ones (CD) for nforce 3 ... the latest ones from the website .. still the same problem ... So Ur suggesting that i Format again and see what happens ? O_o ?

Well i tried installing a STANDARD CS:S Server and guess what ... SAME PROBLEM lol this is getting funny !

But i have to say it took more time till it got to 100% .... common my server was great , everyone loved it .. now all they say is LAG lag lag ! Lag Lag Lag !

Hmmm, fresh install still issues...

If you are behind a router make sure the networks are setup correctly. Also make sure you did add your addons one at a time and tested the server for stability.

The only thing I can think of is with what darkzealot had mentioned. if its wired, i'd look into the wires or even the router. if its wireless thats a problem in its own, esspecally if you're using encryptions. the better the encryption, the worse network performance is..

When i was first reading i thought it was because its the fact you're using winx64. but you tried win32 and you're still haivng issues. The only other thing i can recommend is trying a more server suited windows version such as 2000 server/advanced server. Another thing to do if you're on cable which i assume you are and you're not behind a router, or even if you aren't, is to get the signal to noise ratio. you can find this by going to the modems page which i belive is http://192.168.1.1 the farther the modem is from the entrance point of the cable line. Also to decrease the noise it helps if you have no open outlets.

starting 9/24/2006 if your problem has been solved please edit your first post and add [solved] to the begining of the title. Thanks.

the only thing that gets me about this, is it would have to be really really bad on the routers part to increase cpu usage. cuz really the only way it would do that is if it mixed the signals creating more calculations, but if it mixed it soo much that it would peg cpu at 100% then i think it would make it so people couldn't connect either. cuz usually line noise is the cause of high latency.

either way worth a try, cuz it is very od. unless your hard drive is starting to crap out, i just read about someone haveing cpu usage problems simular and fixing it by replacing the hard drive. i used to know a program that tested hard drive health, so something like that. it would suck to just replace the hard drive only to find out some idiot on a forum was horribly wrong. lol.

but really, it is an od problem, cuz if you knew what you were doin with the install, then i don't think thats the problem, you may try another format, but i don't think it will make a difference. unless it is the hd, it will get worse.

i wonder, just kinda thinking and typeing, the memory could be goin out as well, don't know what would start it up all of a sudden, but yea. the hd kinda makes sense, cuz formating and installing is a lot of work for a hd, and would worsin anything that was slightly doing wrong.

with all that said, i have no clue.. lol. could be anything, could be a lot of things, could be one stupid little thing that were all overlooking.
