Server Admins: creating a successful server
#1
I was hoping some server admin’s out there may be able to offer some advice.

I realize it takes time etc, but here’s what I’ve done so far lol. I do see maybe 5-6 players on at times.

I have had 4 dedicated servers running for about a month now, and I’m doing my best to get the name out there and get regular players.

I have setup the 4 servers based on what seems to be the popular choices these days for Counter-Strike Source.

Server #01 Assault Addicts (assault 24/7)
Server #02 Dustaphon (dust and dust2 24/7)
Server #03 Blender (cycle of other popular maps)
Server #04 Scoutzknivez (… with gravity etc, something different)

Also setup a nice website and forum to go with the community: http://www.brainstew.co.nz

Appreciate any advice from other server admin’s out there on how I can get players on a regular basis.

Cheers
Ryan

The biggest issue I've seen is clans buying a dedicated box, and running like 4 servers trying to fill them all. This will only work if you have like 50 people backing up the servers to get them full.

I would recommend to start small with one server, get that popular, then expand. Very rarely does a new clan survive with 3+ servers and no base members.

Whenever I thought a new server I do 6 things "Server Name, Map, NO ADMIN, Server Settings, Bots, Advertising"

For me the most important thing is the server name that's how you bring in players into your server. Pick a title with the most important features of the server.

The maps you already pick the right ones.

The no admin for me when I start a new server I let players do/say whatever they want at the beginning then after a while I would admin the server and don't be to quick to mute/kick/ban players if not then you will have an empty server.

I always like to have 2 or 4 bots to get the my servers started make the bots easy this way players don't get own by bots and leave to another server. Don't fill the server with bots players hate to play in a server with a bunch of bots.

When advetising your servers don't only post a banners. Type the server names, max player slots, location, and addons...

Hope that helps.

Here is a post I did 3 years ago on how one person can get their game server started alone.
