Questions about QoS & roles (Win 2003/2008)
#1
Hi,

1)
For hosting with Windows 2003/2008, I have seen many suggestions about adding Application Server Role for better performance, but from reading the description at Microsoft TechNet, I don't see how it would benefit a Source Dedicated Server. Can anyone confirm on this?

(Microsoft TechNet - Application Server Role)

2)
Also, I used to turn off QoS, as many suggestions state this feature is useless, but lately I have came across many discussion threads about VoIP, web hosting, database hosting, and people do suggest using QoS. Can anyone confirm whether or not QoS is useful for SRCDS?

Some articles that I came across regarding QoS:

(Netgear - How QoS Improves Performance)
(Microsoft - Windows XP Quality of Service (QoS) enhancements and behavior)
(Why We Don't Need QoS)
(lifehacker.com - Debunking Common Windows Performance Tweaking Myths)

Thanks.

MSDN Wrote:Who will be interested in this role?
  • Host applications that are built with the .NET Framework 3.0
  • Host applications that are built to use COM+, Message Queuing, Web services, and distributed transactions
  • Connect to an intranet or to the Internet to exchange information
  • Host applications that expose or consume Web services
  • Host applications that expose Web pages
  • Interoperate with other remote systems running on disparate platforms and operating systems

QoS would require you to have the hardware to support it, probably rather high performance routers, also it would only benefit you, if you are currently maxing out your Internet connection, Or close to.

Thanks for your reply.

I have read the Who will be interested in this role? part already, just don't know which of them apply to SRCDS.

What is your actual experience with this then?

My take is, as my box is only used for hosting SRCDS, I actually don't need to add any role at all. I can't confirm unless I try it, but I don't want to install extra stuffs for my remote dedi, and that's why I am checking with those who have actual experience with using the server roles.

As for the hardware, I checked with my hosting and the staff said it does support QoS, so the remaining consideration is whether QoS benefit SRCDS or not.

Besides the hardware, according to the Microsoft article that I read, the application has to support QoS as well, otherwise QoS will not be used.

My main interest of using QoS, is how good it can prioritize the traffics, but as for my game servers, I am only using around 20 mbps of my 100 mbps connection, according to those articles that I have read, QoS isn't going to do anything.

And according to that "Why We Don't Need QoS" article, if the usage is close to the max capacity, it is just better to increase the max, than using QoS.

I guess it is just like adding more RAM, instead of doing those little performance tweaks to free up a few MB more of memory.

I actually was hoping to get some feedback about the actual experience with them.

I am going to try QoS first, as it is just a matter of turning it on, and maybe trying to add the Application Server Role to my home machine to see how it goes.

Thanks for the reply anyway.

Okay plain and simple, you don't need any of them, it would just be a wast.

Yup, from what I have been reading, those stuffs are not for SRCDS. Smile

Anyway, I will try on my home box in order to confirm.

Thanks again.
