Full server taking up 100% of a core?
#1
When my TF2 server boosted at 66 tic reaches 32/32 players it takes up 100% of a core. I use srcdsfpsboost.exe. Without srcdsfpsboost.exe, the cpu usage drops to about nothing. I would not use srcdsfpsboost.exe, but it's what reduces my player's ping by about 20. Is there a way to reduce the ping by 20 the same way srcdsfpsboost.exe does without it using massive resources?

Server Specs and what not:

Unfortunately, as Mooga would say, Orangbox is a whore and consumes a lot of resources. srcdsfpsbooster should be run when trying to increase your FPS not your ping which is interesting. Also, what plugins are you running.

It's a vanilla server. It has happened with all the servers on all the different type of dedicated servers I've rented. Boosting the FPS = lower pings.

That's cool, I never noticed that before. I guess you learn something every day Smile.

Anyway back to your problem. I am guessing you are located in some sort of datacenter correct? You could run traceroute to see if there is congestion and then contact your provider. There is a couple of helpful tools which pretty much run a traceroute and ping at the same time and combine the results to diagnose network problems. Unfortunately, many factors affect ping. Are you experiencing any choke? Is anything else running on the server?

There is nothing else running on my server, i am not experiencing any choke. I bought three boxes in three different locations to test it out and no matter what, the ping is always +10 higher than what it is supposed to be unless I boost it.

This is because the latency you see in game isn't necessarily "ping" its the time it takes the server to respond. So if the fps is higher the server will respond quicker. It doesn't make the connection better or anything.
That being said you would almost never notice a game play difference with 10 latency.

Sometimes you have to look at things the way they appear. If it uses 100% on a full server, that means it is too demanding on the processor. All the srcdsfpsbooster does is trick your processor into running at a higher frequency than it really is, thus making it over perform all the time. As skeletor said, your ping isn't really going down, just the time added by the server.

I would recommend either lowering your slot count, or turning off srcdsfpsbooster to achieve best quality on your processor.

What I do to control the cpu usage when running booster is use the fps_max command limiting the boost depending on the server & it's role. Pub servers for instance run lower than scrim servers.
