[SOLVED] Need pointers on renting rack space...
#1
Hi guys,

I have been renting a dedi box, but I am thinking about the option of buying my own box and renting a rack space (it is called co-location, correct?).

Can anyone suggest me some companies (either Central, or West Coast).

I have never done this before, and wonder how I should do it. Is that I have to ship my box to them, then they install it to the rack for me? Or I have to buy the box from them?

Thanks.

Found enough pointers on this topic by doing a little Google search. Big Grin

In case other newbies like me who want to get an idea:

- Yes, need to ship the box to the hosting.
- Either tower or rack.

This site is good as a starting point (just an informative site):

$50 per month mid tower colocation with plenty of bandwidth for game servers.

I use them for my KC location, except I have more than 10 dedi's with them Toungue

loopyman,

Thanks for sharing the info. I really appreciate it.

The main reason that I am thinking about this option, is because I would have more control with the choice of hardware. Also, while I am pretty happy with my current hosting, yet they don't have any West Coast servers available ( I want a 2nd box in West Coast, for getting some oversea players. Smile ).

West Coast, look for Los Angeles as the Bay Area is very expensive. For LA, I recommend Pacific Rack and WebNX. For central, I would look at FDC in Denver. You could colo a server at FDC for 40 a month with 1000GB Internap and get better connectivity than Joes Datacenter, especially for game servers.

SBT,

Very useful info, thanks for sharing with me.

For my own TF2 servers, I will still be renting unmanaged dedi.

For the CS:S/L4D2/DoDS that I am hosting together with my friend, we are going to try the co-location option. Currently we are checking out those Dell servers, and I am going to contact those LA ones that you gave me.

P.S.
The speed test site that you gave me in my other post, it was very fast.

I have tried 20+ large file downloads so far, that is one of the three that reach the expected rate of the 100 mbps.

That me confused with the other results though... Toungue

You can host directly in a Hurricane Electric data center for next to nothing, but their pings aren't the best.

Colocating a server at a Hurricane Electric datacenter would cost you over $120 a month, especially in the Bay Area. with little bandwidth. If anything, go directly to Ubiquity for colocation.

I have gotten quotes for 7u rack colo in Fremont CA for ~$100 per month with 100mbps shared bandwidth... They only charge $2 per mbps.

I think Ubiquity is pretty good.

When I started hosting TF2, I used the shared box from DarkStarLLC, which was using Ubiquity, and both my game server and the free fast download server were very good.

I run a Gaming Community and small GSP. I have spent many weeks researching colocating options and found they simply don't save you any money over well-priced dedicated server rentals. Colocating is very expensive and has many pitfalls over dedicated server rentals.

I'm not here to sell servers or make money off people, but I have something that might help you. I have managed to secure some unbelievable pricing for multi-core dedicated servers with tons of bandwidth from two companies on the West Coast, USA. One is Colocrossing and the other is Ubiquity. Both have been very good to me. I resell these servers by word of mouth at almost no mark-up to help other communities and help pay for our expenses. And I'm not talking $200.00 + per month either. They have an optional TCAmin control panel system as well.

I currently have a San Jose, CA dedicated server box I'm renting for our Community at and excellent price and I no longer need it as of next month. I've held off in giving it up because the price is so good and was hoping to find someone who would like to rent it. If you're interested in renting it, or others at the volume prices I get these for, PM me for the details. You will likely find this a more economic way to do things than dedicated colocating a single server, and this server is very nice.

Kind Regards,
Mike Vail

From who? You won't get $2/meg unless you are on a high commit. HE is at $1.5/meg with a GigE commit. 7U for $100 isn't the expense. You simply won't get any power with that pricing.

I was incorrect, the full specs I got offered was 100mbps 7U and 2amps for $200 per month. I had to go back and look at the quote.

Who offered you 100mbps with that quote? They would be losing money.

You understand that makes no sense at all. You also understand that would be under a 3-5 Year contract along with pure HE bandwidth.
