Hey I want to get a new server box for my clan and have a few questions...
Considering Windows 2003 and CentOS Linux
FPS really isn't important. Windows 2003 can get to 500 when running the booster which is fine. CentOS won't go over 300 on default kernel which is ok.
I am just wondering what everyones oppinion is of my two options?
Would the game servers use less system resources on Windows 2003 or CentOS?
What option would be better for large public game servers?
And feel free to add in any oppinions you have, thank you as always!

For a newbie it will be easier to run on a Windows OS rather than Linux, If you look at our linux support forum you will see why.
Looking for a game server? Visit fullfrag.com and pick one up as low as $2.50 / mo!

I am actually really familiar with both operating systems, even with kernels in linux and a few other semi-advanced things.
Most of my experience is linux but I am wondering mostly if the game servers use less in Windows 2003, and if a large public server would perform better? With tickrate and cpu usage, that sort of thing.

+1000 for Linux, it's so easy when you know the few basic commands (cd, ls, ...).
Debian is easy and powerfull !

Well there is one consideration, if you wanna host garrysmod, do it on Windows as Linux is not supported.
The part about what runs best, i don't think any one made a real attempt on measuring what runs best.
Instead you should probably just look on what you like the best.

Both Linux and Windows can run the exact same amount of slots on the same machine, it's just what you prefer.
There is no difference in the quality of the server. (of course there is always a difference but it's negligible)

Some mods and addons don't have linux binaries, or don't work correctly on linux operating systems.

Linux in my opinion, you will have more resources free to use for other game servers/stuff.
The servers will be more stable, and the entire OS will be more stable than a windows setup, also more secure if your planning on running a plugin like HLXstats that requires a webserver (port 80 windows arggh)
As for CentOS, do have a look into Debian, it will run 1000fps with the standard kernel And is very powerful&secure.

I don't know of any popular mods that has one-sided suport.
I know that admin game panels tend to be split, however.
