Hello! how are you? i hope youre fine!

well, im writing because im having some lag problems with my l4d servers and i know that it is for a rates problem, so could you help me?

I have 3 L4D Servers in a GSP server (one VS of 16 players, 1 COOP of 12 players and 1 VS of 8 players), and the rates that i was using was this:

Quote:

and i had TERRIBLE lag with this rates. The ping was quite normal, but the LAG was TERRIBLE, and the CPU consuption was always at 90% with peaks of 100%.

So, i deleted those rates and restarted the servers and let it run at stock rates. After doing that, the LAG decreased significately, BUT, the choke increased from 0 with the above rates to about 20 or more!

so, i know that i should rate my servers and not leave the running at stock rates, so could you help me rating them?
Oh, and what about Choke 0? with the above rates, it was at 0 most of the time..

THAK YOU VERYY MUCH! Big GrinBig Grin

Take all those rate commands out, l4d runs best at its default rates.

Choke in most cases is the clients rates being set improperly. Loss generally pertains to server rate issues. I would suggest looking at your rates set on your client to make sure you're not forcing a lower rate update, or the minimum rate is higher then that of the servers max rate.

If you're still having issues you can always submit a ticket with your GSP and have them look into it. They should see whether or not it's an issue with the machine being overloaded, or sometimes there are the odd rogue server's that continually crash and eat into the CPU power causing all the server's on that machine to perform poorly.

my GSP's support SUCK, and i have a VPS so i can connect remotely to the PC where the server is hosted.

For example now, the 3 servers are using 65 / 70% of CPU of an Core 2 Duo 2.66ghz with all of them full (8/8 12/12 and 16/16)

and the Stock rate is Rate 10000. as i know that should be at least at 25000 / 30000... or am i wrong?

thank you!

pd: and my main problem is the LAG; no the choke... i have high lag in the servers but the ping is quite normal (about 55 / 65 in average)

As loopyman said, you're stock rates for L4D should be fine, and you shouldn't have any need for touching them.

Now if I understand you correctly, you're using a VPS to host these games? Or do you have an actual GSP hosting them on their own dedicated hardware?

im running those 3 servers in a VPS hosted in the GSP's hardware.

The VPS hardware is: Core 2 Quad q9550 2.66ghz WITH ONLY 2 CORES activated and 2.0gb.

VPS's never perform well for game servers, Some people say they are fine, however I never like to run game servers on VPS' because they just run like crap.

Probably should look into getting your own dedicated server.

As soon as a different customer on that VSP machine uses the CPU, your server will start to lag.

VSP's are NOT suitable for running gameservers, when people say "My server runs fine on a VSP" it means that there simply are no other clients on that machine that run CPU intense programs, as soon as one gets on your server will feel it badly.
