CPU Upgrade Advice
#1
I about to start a GSP but I believe my currently colocated box isnt powerful enough and needs to be improved before more customers are taken on.

Core 2 Duo 2.66GHz 3mb Cache 1333FSB
4GB RAM
320Gb HDD
1TB HDD
100MB Up and Down
Windows Server 2003 Standard
TC Admin Master License

All my current customers are Garrys Mod servers for which total (24+15+40) 78 slots with them being avg 30/78 in slots avg use. My question is whats the best CPU for my current box which is LGA775 to get the most slots on the box but with some quality. I was thinking the Q9650 3.0GHz but roughly how many slots does this equal per core Gmod wise. Any other advice is much appreciated.

There's no CPU that can run that many GMod slots, garrysmod is one hell of a server to host.

The only way I've seen it run good is in a virtual space so it doesn't affect the other servers on the CPU, You can max out any CPU with 2 players if wanted Toungue

of course bigger is always better and a quad core will do twice as good over the dual core. Make sure to set 1 server to each core for gmod, most likely they will all 3 max out with the slots mentioned above. (if ran without restrictions)

Well one 40 slot takes about one core of my current cpu and these are never full. Are there any things I can do server side to reduce CPU consumption.

For gmod, drop the fps_max to 128 or 64, there is no use in the default 333 or 250. It will drop cpu usage considerably.

Thanks that was thing I wanted to know as at the moment im not Server FPS boosting any of the servers (As the garrysmods servers CPU usage went crazy) and I was wondering if I could FPS some but not others eg FPS boost CSS.

Quick question through TCADMIN is there a way to shut down servers that completely lock out a CPU core for a duration as Ive had some server screw up gamemodes errors and 2 people on a Go Fish is using 100% of one Core.

You can disable game servers, but other than that, I'm not sure what you mean

You can setup cpu quotas, so if one server runs 50% more then a few minutes, it will be turned off.

@ Nisd - This doesn't always work, and in the past when using the load balancing feature of TCAdmin we found it shutting off server's that weren't having issues or causing high CPU usage. We haven't tried it lately as we disabled it after the issues, so maybe it was just buggy back then with TCAdmin and is now fixed, however it's just something to take note of Smile

Might be worth a shot, and if you have a Master license, you'll need to edit this by going System Settings -> Plugins -> Automation Configuration. Near the bottom is the Load Balancing settings.

If you only have a remote license, you likely don't have access to this panel and would have to ask your host to enable it for you.

I got a master license so ill have a play around with different setups.

Setting limitations on the gameserver for spawning props etc it will drastically reduce CPU usage.
Hard thing to do is to find a good midway not disabling too much or too few.

Coul you not run an FPS booster, that will potentialy give all SRCDS's the ability to run at 512~ FPS, then lock the GMOD servers to 64/128/x FPS in command line, also why not use windows proccess priority to stop GMOD servers from locking a core up (as much), by setting CSS servers to High priority and GMOD to above normal or just normal.

Even if a GMOD server locks up the core at 100% the css server shouldn't be affected as much... ( afaik)

The problem is that once a core starts getting above 85-90% usage the perfomance drops heavily.
Even if you set different priorities, the core still uses 100% and also still balances the processes on the core

Get a Q8200 or a Q9300... Best bang for your buck.

I second the Q9300, but if you can try to get the Q9550 you can never go wrong with those either

So the Q9650 isnt worth the extra money over the Q9550 for Garry's Mod 10 hosting?
