HPET

How do you know if your motherboard supports HPET? I have a mobo from around 05, a Pentium 4 3.2 Ghz w/ HT. I think it's Socket 478. I installed windows server 2008 and only getting 512 fps.

It dosent support it, its too old. But it will be in the bios for future reference.

I'm pretty sure anything Socket 755 and later supports it. However I have herd some of the new boards don't, but they have newer timers that support 1000fps.

And @ dualcore, if his board didn't support HPET, any linux OS wouldn't achieve over 512fps right?

Linux can run 1000FPS regardless of any motherboard etc.

I have stock kernel and I don't have HPET, but I have 1000 fps.

Are you sure about your statement?

If you can't find it in the BIOS, take a quick look online for any information on the board. Some boards, although older have BIOS updates that enable the HPET feature.

What version of linux do you have? I do believe that the latest ubuntu linux has a 1000hz kernel if im not mistaken, and possibly some others.

I have the default tickless Debian 5 kernel for 64 bit systems.

Why do you mention Hz? I thought we were talking about FPS.

Could you elaborate on your statement that custom kernel is required for 1000 FPS.

I am a noob at linux, but I do know you can achieve pretty much any fps with linux, all you need is a custom kernal, set to the hz of the fps you want, for example, a 10,000hz kernel will give you 10,000fps, but i doubt itll be stable. . .
