Lan server, increase download speed
#1
okay, i understand when you rent a server you have limited bandwidth available and can only upload so much, so instead of the users downloading maps/sounds etc the server refers them to a web server to download the files.

well if i were running a lan server and this is not an issue is there a way to increase the servers upload rate to something very high? i know i could share the maps so that other users can download them but this method is alot more convenient due to not knowing what maps are going to be played and saves time. I know how to run APACHE web servers but i would really rather not just to host some files on a network.

Im sure ive probably just missed a command somewhere like upload_rate = xxx

searches on the web imply that im running an online server and refer to hosting files on web servers.

thanks guys Smile xoxo

Most Game server providers don't set a cap on bandwidth, but dedicated server companies and web hosting companies will. Also, I would tend to say that downloading from fast download URL if on the same network as the Game Server wouldn't be a whole lot faster that just downloading straight from the server.

I've read (on forums) that the download speed in-game is limited to server's "sv_maxrate" cvar. Furthermore the "sv_maxrate" cvar is limited to 30000 by the server itself. Thus, the maximum download speed in-game is ~30k/s.

Fastdl is much faster even if you host on the same server.

What css said is correct.
for all non-orangebox games it's 30000 sv_maxrate at the fullest. (30kB/s)
for orangebox games it's 100000 sv_maxrate at the fullest. (100kB/s)

On a LAN, I find it easy to set up a quick webserver with XAMPP and point the downloadURL to that. It's set-up with maybe 10 minutes and you're all set to use the fast downloads.

thanks for the help guys, i might just end up running a web server and adding a .bat, as a matter of fact i might start a new thread to see if someone can help me edit my current .bat (srcds.bat) that launches the server to also launch a standalone web server.

thanks!

There is also a windows port for Apache.
Another option that you can use with it is make a public FTP server and let people download you "LAN Map Pack." It lets people easily download a large set of maps. A local torrent server would be near, but probably a PITA to set up :-\

See the other thread where somebody set up Apache. I said it isn't difficult. He managed to install and have his own fastdl server in very easy way.

Apache in itself doesn't consume resources at all, so you can run it all times.

I actually would never use IIS for any web server solution other than TCAdmin (which it is required for). Whether Windows or Linux, I prefer Apache.
