Whats the best tickrate, and slot number i should use for my server?
#1
Hi, sorry so soo many questions and such but this is the first server ive home hosted and it being such im finding im having issues I have never experienced before.

As for this question, Im not sure what tickrate and how many slots to use. Here are my system and internet speed specs, any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

OS: Windows XP Pro SP2 32 Bit
Proscessor: Intel Core i7 CPU 920 @ 2.67 (I can overclock to 2.93 but I dont figure that would give much of a boost)
Ram: 3 GB DDR3 ( I can upgrade to a 64 bit OS, and get 6 more as the 32 can only support 3 of the 9 I have, but I was just waiting for Win7)

In this case, your limit will be your connection, you might be able to squeeze 12 players out of it at 33 tickrate (for CSS).
That server you mentioned is very capable of running a LOT of slots, I can't give you an exact number since I haven't tried an i7 CPU before.

Co-location in a nearby datacenter...
Looking for a game server? Visit fullfrag.com and pick one up as low as $2.50 / mo!

?

I dont have the money to pay for server hosting, and Im actualy running the server on my main machine, which I know you guys frown upon, BUT, I have it working correctly. Its a little tricky setup but what I had to do was add another internal ip to my computer, assign the server to one of the ip's, forward the server to that ip, and assign gmod to the other IP.

Well, you wont get very far due to the lack of bandwidth. I thought that was your main machine anyway...
Go to http://speedtest.net and show us your output.

My output from Speedtest is on the fist post.... And Yes it is on my main machine, but my main machine is awsome and I dont take any noticable effects from running it on here. And Yes I can host and play on the same machine, If anyone wants tutorials or Video proof Id be glad to offer it so I can help add to the options everyone has.

I know I wont get far, I hope to get it setup and going though, and get enough players to be able to at least pay most of the bill on a professional host.

With that upload speed nobody will be able to hold much of a stable connection unless they are right on top of you. Sad At least not with more than 12 people.

Now I feel retarded... >_>

Yea, you're not going to get more than 10 or 12 with that upload rate bud. Sorry.

That will be ~36 slots 66 tickrate.

As for internet cost... is it really THAT expensive where you live?
I am currently at 50Mb down and 5 Mbup for 100$ a month. (And that is expensive here in holland.
