Oh, orangebox engine uses much more. . . But yeah, you can have this badass server, but may not have the bandwidth to back it up. . . and bandwidth is expensive no days my friend. . .

I ran a surf server for 2 months and thats how much it used on average each month. Fact not an idea. Your server might be completely different.

I tend to believe surf uses more bandwidth as a regular server.

Also you should be able to do around 325 100tick 1000fps slots.

Hey Virtual,

Best bet is to just start loading it up. You have more then enough ram. Cause HL/HL2 a lot of people complain about REG just make sure your not using too much RAM. So maybe go with 30 to 40% of the RAM. Since you have 16 GBs - shoot with 8 GBs less usage.

So you can probably install 30-40 servers to use out 8 or 16 GBs.

Now the REG will be fine, but its based on CPU usage for lag and lag spikes.

1000 fps - vs 256 fps is going to use more CPU
32 slots vs 10 slots active is going to use more CPU
100 tick vs 66 tick is going to use more CPU

Its Trial and Error.

Install 20 servers make them all 1000 fps - 100 tick high settings and start filling servers up. Once you see traffic in the server - you can check the CPU usage on the box.

--------------------

1) Install 1 server - whatever settings you prefer. 100 tick 500 fps.
2) Make it 32 slots and put it on one of the 8 cores (Single CPU test)
3) Fill it to 25-32 players. Once its active - check CPU Usage

Task manager, services, srcds using the most usage

Say it uses 20% of the 1 CPU. Test the reg and lag.(choke) If you like the performance at 20% then x that by 8 servers.

32 slots - x 8 servers at 20% CPU usage = Good quality
16 slots - x 16 servers at MAX 20% cpu usage = Good quality.

RAM = How many installs

REG. Less ram your using the better the Reg. Just dont use too much.

CPU = How much it can handle at a quality level

The lower the CPU means no lag. Just make sure you dont have too many active servers.

Test - test and test again. you will figure it out.

------------------------

So again. You can install 100 servers and use up all that RAM but REG will not be the best. You can install 100 servers and not one server will ever get used and you will be fine with CPU.

Not sure that is the best way to explain it but I am sure it helps compared to the other answers you were getting.

Install 1 server to one core and fill it up.

Good luck.
Note:

You dont have to select a core for each install. I recommend not selecting CPUs when installing the servers in the future. Let the CPU control everything - vs - you trying to balance the box.

I ran a cream server for 2 months and thats how abundant it acclimated on boilerplate anniversary month. Fact not an idea. Your server ability be absolutely different.
