couldn't exec server.cfg
#1
Hi,

I've just installed the Source dedicated server (srcds) according to the installation guide.
However, when I start srcds it complains about it failing to exec server.cfg.
The srcds is installed using the same path as in the install guid, c:\srcds and I've tested to put server.cfg in the following directories
c:\srcds
c:\srcds\cstrike
c:\srcds\cstrike\cfg

Tho, srcds complains about server.cfg in all 3 cases.
Output from srcds:
Console initialized.
Attempted to create unknown entity type event_queue_saveload_proxy!
Game .dll loaded for "Counter-Strike: Source"
maxplayers set to 16
Network: IP 192.168.0.31, mode MP, dedicated Yes, ports 27015 SV / 27005 CL
Executing dedicated server config file
Error: Material "sprites/bubble" : proxy "AnimatedTexture" not found!
couldn't exec server.cfg
Adding master server 207.173.177.11:27011
Adding master server 69.28.151.178:27011
Connection to Steam servers successful.
VAC beta secure mode is activated.

Any clues why it complains about server.cfg and where should it be placed ?
I've seen guides that mentiones c:\srcds\cstrike, while other guides says c:\srcds\cstrike\cfg

all cfg's like the server.cfg must be placed in the cfg folder.

OK, but I have a server.cfg in all the 3 folders mentioned in my first post and that includes the c:\srcds\cstrike\cfg folder and srcds still complains about not being able to exec server.cfg.

Any clues ?

Remove the other 2 cfgs that are not in the cfg folder to help keep things organized and prevent possible problems. You would be suprised what windows can create for errors ><

Problems with windows never surprises me !!
Would much rather run it on a Linux box, which I have much more experience with (Linux SW developer), however, there are others in the family that also uses this computer and they're stuck in the windows swamp.

yea.. thats why usually if i see some sort of weird error.. or something isn't working right.. the FIRST thing i try.. is simply closing whatever it was.. and restarting the computer.. and trying it again.. lol.

and it works about 90 percent of the time..

Rename the file "server.cfg" WITH quotations. You most probably renamed the file server.cfg.txt (thanks to Windoze).

Open My Computer > Tools > Options (or Folder Options). Looks for something that says "blah blah show file extensions" or something similar.

Don't have english XP installed, so can't tell you exactly whats its called, but says something about popular file extensions i believe.

Enable this (to show file extensions) - and you should be able to rename the file server.cfg properly now.
