CPU & RAM usage

Configs:

2x Xeon 3.0/4GB Ram

I don't undertand abou Linux usage process...

I would like to know how many percent my machine is using, as yet, as the experience bumper to the server (TF2 18 Slots).

I wonder about the power of the machine, ignoring the speed of my connection.

Today I saw the list of processes, and it is thus:

Code:
top - 13:52:01 up 209 days, 17:39,  4 users,  load average: 0.85, 0.70, 0.54
Tasks: 103 total,   1 running, 102 sleeping,   0 stopped,   0 zombie

Code:
Cpu(s):  2.0% us,  0.2% sy,  0.0% ni, 97.7% id,  0.0% wa,  0.1% hi,  0.0% si
your system is to 97.7% idle. see "man top" (type it at some linux console) for a detailed explanation of all those numbers.

but, use the search function of this forum to find out my experience/opinion about cpu load with respect to game servers... (short: don't look at it)

btw: don't run your game servers as root user (as you do right now). this is a severe security risk.

The root user can do everything on linux (really without any limits, unlike e.g. Administrator on Windows). So this user should really not be used for daily work. You have been warned...
(I once wrote a script to cleanup log files, and I installed it as a cronjob running as root. A stupid bug in that script deleted me the whole hard disk one day...)

:S

Sorry that guy ... but good luck to create another script, you will succeed!

Ok, I have some machines that I use the "Screen" to up the servers. Especially for Counter-Strike. In TF2 is good up in the "Screen" or not? Use more memory, CPU...?

Current command up, to my server:

Code:
screen -A -m -d -S tf2mod ./srcds_run -game tf -autoupdate -ip 200.139.115.15 -port 27020 +maxplayers 24 +map cp_gravelpit -tickrate 66 -sys_ticrate 1000 +sv_region 2 +exec server.cfg &

Thx Wink

EDIT: I live in Brazil... the website http://fpsmeter.fragaholics.de, will be useful for me to measure the FPS of my servers?

I already did ;-) And it is now no longer running as root...

running servers in a screen is always a good idea. it has no effect on the game server itself. the screen process takes only very few ressources (a few kb of memory, unmeasurable cpu load).

yes. it does not measure the ping or anything related to the connection, only the fps (using the stats command).
