Ok so I was havin problems some ppl sayin they would ddos me. and then my internet went out like 45 minutes later. not sure if it was that or not. but i asked my ISP what measure could i take regardin a DDoS issue. and they asked me


whats DDoS? Ive never heard of it. So i spoke to a supervisor. he said.

I think you're being paranoid. A DDoS attack works by sending hundred's of thousands of requests to a specific service running on a server. For example, a web server, having hundreds of thousands of machines request web pages from that machine simultaneously, tying up all available connection slots. A DDoS attack can't really work on an individual because you have no services on your connection, and it only blocks incoming connections, not outgoing. It also wouldn't cause your internet to go offline, you'd stay online, but your computer would be flooded with so many connection attempts that it wouldn't be able to respond to them all. If you're behind a router then a DDoS attack is even less likely as the router would reject all incoming connections. And lastly the chances of someone having access to the number of machines needed to create a DDoS attack are very slim.

It was probably just coincidence that your internet went out.

If you really want to ask your ISP, tell them you think a distributed denial of service attack is being made on you. But they might laugh.

you ask to speak to his supervisor and just keep going up the chain until someone ether knows what you are talking about or can forward you to someone who does.

Yes it can. If you ping an IP address your modem is sending a packet to the other persons modem and then back to you. so you can DDoS a individual if they have not taken the correct cautions.

King Goilio is right, Its possible to bring someone's router down. It can even be done without the use of "zombies" or just a DoS attack. There are perl based scripts that can accomplish this...However the likely hood your internet will remain down after a reboot of the router is unlikely and many ISP's have small methods of preventing this from happening such as flood control built into the firmware of there modem's.

yea like i mentioned idk if it was because of that or not. my main concerne here is really that my ISP had no clue wat DDoS was. and yes i did tell them what it stands for. i even asked them can you track an ip and block a certain Ip from pingin my Ip. and he was liek not we cant do that? idk..

if your isp doesnt know what a DDos attack is then you might want to get a new isp.

optimum online. it was annoyin. x[ the supervisor told me that online security is mine to deal with and after i briefly explained to him what DDoS was he told me if you have a firewall then no one can ping your ip. is this true?

No, anyone can ping your IP. If you have a higher end router, it will most likely block DDoS attacks for you, so don't be too paranoid. It also takes 3+ internet connections to really start a DDoS that means anything for you, and I'm guessing the guy who said he was going to DDoS you is just a noob anyways

nto sure.. he was showin off in the game server that he had 1000+ injections or zombie idk what he called. it . and i guess ill have to update my router thne. the one i have is a couple years old netgear

The idea in DDoS attack is to saturate target computer's bandwidth. It's possible to do even plain DoS attack against a home connection. The extra "D" in the Denial-of-service is for distributed, which means the attack is launched from multiple computers.

For example I know many people who have 8M / 1M ADSL connections. I've got server which has 100M / 100M connection. I could easily send 8M of data from my server to any of those ADSL lines and that way practically shutdown those ADSL lines. The data can be anything. I would probably send large UDP packets instead of plain ping packets because ISPs might have some clever firewalls in their network blocking ping.

Router update doesn't help anything. There wouldn't be any DDoS attacks in the internet if the attack could be stopped by routers.

Your best way to prevent being DDoS'd is not to let unfriendly people know your IP address.

i was wondering. is there anyway for me to know what ip is pingin me. are there any logs i can view somewhere or. soemthing? or is pingin someone computer kept completely anonymous?

Usually when someone DDOS attacks you, they use multiple hosts to do massive amounts of it.

I have the tools to do it, just not the hard ware
