Increasing L4D server FPS
#1
I did it the other day on my AMD laptop

I got a new more powerful laptop and reinstalled L4D SRCDS and now it wont go above 20 FPS and it sucks cus the update rate is 25 max but I set it to 100 for update and cmd rates...

Here is a dump of my server.cfg and start up command

Quote:srcds.exe -console -game left4dead +hostport 27019 +map l4d_hospital01_apartment -tickrate 100 +tickrate 100 +fps_max 1000 exec server

Quote:sv_lan 0
//setmaster add 68.142.72.250:27011
//setmaster add 72.165.61.189:27011
motd_enabled 0

// Standard config cvars
sv_allow_lobby_connect_only 0
exec banned_user.cfg
exec banned_ip.cfg
sv_voiceenable 1
sv_alltalk 0
sv_cheats 0
sv_region 1

mp_disable_autokick 1

sv_tags "xfreerollerx,xxxx,winrar,xxx"

hostname "XXXX Legit Left For Dead XXXX"
rcon_password "fuck1"
sv_contact xfreerollerx@gmail.com

/// Rates
sv_maxcmdrate 101
sv_maxupdaterate 101
sv_mincmdrate 101
sv_minupdaterate 101
sv_minrate 30000
rate 30000

I dont want to hear anything about it being a laptop, its a high end machine and is more than capable of running 1 server for me.

And the old laptop was able to do like 250 FPS....

Firstly, you don't need the tickrate command twice. Also, l4d does not need anymore than 20fps, it performs fine.

It gets kinda choppy though

I copied the server over to my QX9650 rig and it still sucks when theres like 300 zombies spawning for some reason...

would this be a network problem?

Ok, I still gotta say that LAPTOPS ARE NOT SERVERS. It does not matter how beefy it is, laptops were not made to run for extended periods of time under heavy loads. Orangebox is gay and does not get as high of FPS as the original EP1 engine. 250 FPS on a EP1 engine is pretty bad, i got 512 on a 1.8ghz celron. L4D is a resource killer because of the AI director (still active in vs). And to the laptop thing again, the laptop motherboard and ram were not made to handle servers. The updaterate or cmdrate does not affect FPS, it only affects tickrate. Change +hostport to -port. Why would you want to spawn 300 zombies again? Also running the quad core that i guess is your gaming computer with the server and the l4d game at the same time will reduce performance. If you had the game running on a separate computer you would get better performance from your gaming computer server.

Pengy explained it quite well, all I have to add is:

L4D doesn't go any higher than 30 at all, even when your server is capable of a 1000FPS, look at the netgraph in any other server that's online (L4D)

And choppyness must only be your server, because I host multiple left4dead servers, and neither of them are choppy.
