GSP Starting Guide: Performance & Volume

Hello again,

Before positing here, please read the introduction post first.

To start my series of posts, I am showing below what server(s) I currently run on and I would appreciate if everybody could do the same so people from around the world could have a good estimation on what machine could better suit their needs. I am personaly only hosting CSS servers on SRDCS and I will be pleased if people share info about other games but please keep it about SRCDS or eventually HLDS, as this is what the forum is all about.

I have read and heard people pretending to be able to run 50 servers on the same computer and I would ask people posting here to keep it realistic and to provide (as much as possible) with "objective" information, meaning that the data you provide was tested at full throttle with all or allmost all slots filled and with a brief description of the other services running. Also, please provide as much as required information about your system, your bandwidth or about gaming experience and howlong you are running it. Please copy paste the block below to describe your own servers.

Small Server:
CPU: Intel C2D 2x 2.33Ghz (E6550)
RAM: 1Gb DDR2, Same amount of Swap (Ideally unused)
OS: Linux (Debian Etch) with 1000Hz Kernel
HD: 2x 250Gb, SATA, Raid 0/1
Bandwidth: 100Mbps
SRCDS Servers:
CS:S Public Server, 16 Slots at Tick 100 (FFA)
CS:S Public Server, 16 Slots at Tick 100 (FFA)
CS:S Public Server, 16 Slots at Tick 66 (Gungame)
CS:S Public Server, 24 Slots at Tick 66 (ZombieMod)
Performance (All Slots Filled):
50% of CPU & 98% of RAM
Remarks:
With another 16 Slots@T66, all servers start lagging and swap is used.
When no one is on the tick100, ram gets down a bit but not 25% less.
If servers are not restarted daily, lags shows easilly on the next day.
Running fine for 3 months now
LAMP Webserver: apache, php, mysql (1 per server)
This would consitute a good "team" dedicated offer

Medium Server (Under Testing):
CPU: Intel C2Q 4x 2.4Ghz (Q6600)
RAM: 8Gb DDR2, Same amount of Swap (Ideally unused)
OS: Linux (Debian Etch) with 1000Hz Kernel
HD: 2x 250Gb, SATA, Raid HARD 1
Bandwidth: 1Gbps
Remarks:
Testing this computer/offer, should be the "regular" computer
To be finalized / setup by end of april, will be re-edited.

RE: GSP Stating Guide: Performance & Volume

Well to add, a 2.00 Ghz processor can host about 40 100 tickrate slots (Not TF2 slots). A gb of ram seems fine for 100 slots, but normal slots not like zombiemod.

Nice to know that. Now I know I wont go much further than that with tick100 slots. Now what is special about TF2 & ZM slots? Please share Smile

Oh yes and, by the way, what do you use? Would you mind posting one or all of your servers here by copy+pasting the block above? Thanx alot ^^

RE: GSP Stating Guide: Performance & Volume

TF2 is on the new orange source engine, it uses much more bandwidth and resources.
Zombiemod is just very heavy to run, changing models crazyness and chaos all in one, see your bandwidth shoot up!

RE: GSP Stating Guide: Performance & Volume

I cant really post my server specs totally because I have never pushed them to the extreme. What I can tell you is that I have one small one, a X2 4600+ and with three 18 slot 100 tickrate servers empty, I get about 2% usage. One server full I get 17-20%, but the highest I have ever seen it go has been 50%.

RE: GSP Starting Guide: Performance & Volume

As far as server specs, I know all we run is dual xeon harpertowns with 12-16GB of memory. All on Gbps connections. We try to prepare for anything.

Bandwidth does jump a whole lot with mods. So watch your bandwidth commits closely. Big Grin
