hey all im thinking about hosting my own dedicated server, i got a PS3 for xmas and i hardly play it, so i was thinking about instaling linux on it a hosting a server i was just wondering if anyone here had done it and could tell me if it's worth it, or what the best build of Linux would be (never used it before), possible its capability as a server

Well you could always try and see what it is like. It will give you knowledge in linux and you can pass on what you have found to others, so just give it a shot and if it works it works that's excellent and if it doesn't then you have learnt something you can pass it on to others. ComputerHelper why be so negative?

not really, but it would be interesting if you can get linux on it and run a server! i suspect the amount of ram would be limiting.

I think it will be very interesting too, I don't know what hardware specs the PS3 has but trying can never hurt.

How dose PS3 have better specs?

The PS3 CPU = 8 Cores
360 = 3 Cores

Even tho the 360 has more system mem then the PS3, the PS3 has more video memory to make up for it

360:
System: 512
Video: 10

PS3:
System: 256
Video: 256

The PS3 also has a much nicer picture due to the video card (the PS3 video card native supports 1080p and blu ray, and the 360 native supports 720p/1080i and upscales to 1080p)

srcds will not run on a PS3 due to it being compiled for the x86 (athlon/pentium etc.) processor architecture. The PS3 uses a 64 bit Power core to run the operating system and control the eight SPE's. Unless Valve compiles and releases srcds for the Power architecture it will not work.

SRCDS Requires as least 512mb of RAM to even start, so I'm not sure this will work.

Wow, because I got an error when loading SRCDS on one of my older computers that said something like "Not Enough RAM. Must have 512mb minimum."
