Slot usage
#1
A lot of people have asked how many slots can my server hold and can someone give me some kind of equation or something that figure out how many slot a certain processor or the amount of ram i would need for css, the orangebox games and so on.

Also does everyone actually have 100 mbps connection to their server or is it brustable connection because 100 mbps is pretty expensive getting up in 1000 dollar range.

Just burstable for 100 mbps is fine. And there is no real equation just estimates. Like a three ghz pentium 4 handles well with at MAX 40 100 tickrate servers. However I would never run that many slots on it, cause if something spikes you'd be screwed.

The best way is to test.
I've generally said you can only run 4 24-man TF2 servers on a Q6600 but I've heard of people running 4 full 24-man TF2 servers on a Q6600 using under 10%...

So test out what your rig can do. Generally, you want to run the servers on the light side. Because if CPU usage goes up for some reason, you're in trouble.

Please do not PM me for server related help

what is better a xeon quad core or a intel core 2 quad? does it matter if the processor is made for a server or not?

for most purposes they are essentially the same, but the dual cpu chipsets are only made for xeons.

ok well i was thinking about a dual xeon server, is there a big difference between e5405 at 2ghz and the e5410 at 2.3ghz

No not a huge difference. But it always better with high GHz. I recommend Core2Quad, but most server companies offer Xeons. We offer both, but that's because we believe in verity.

The best server config would roughly be 4GB of ram and 250 GB HDD, with a Quad core, either Xeon or Core2. That would be your best bet for profit, anything more is a waste unless you got dual quads.

4 gbs of RAM is not necessary for SOURCE based games as they use extremely low amounts of memory. Orange box engine is totally different however...
